So I've been driving around for sometime now uninspected. Well today it caught up to me. The reason I haven't inspected this truck is because my window wouldn't go down and I had an CEL that I wasn't too sure about. Well after getting off with a warning because I lied and said I was on my way to the dealer right then, I figured this was going to cost me some money. I get a phone call after about 5 hours and they tell me its going to cost $936.00 to get inspected. Here is the list of repairs
1. Right front wheel bearing $403
2. Right front axle seal $20.00
3. Right rear plate light $53.00 ( insane amount to change a bulb) ill be doing this repair
4. Window regulator and motor $238.00
5. Leak detection pump $213.00

So these are the must have items to get inspected. On top of these I have the following things that need repair.
1. Spacers between my leaf springs. $30.00
2. Blower motor $207.00
3. Heater core $700.00

Needless to say I'm a bit overwhelmed with repairing this truck.

Jeez, you can do all of those yourself. Hit up Rock Auto and get the stuff there.

Sounds like a good time to learn to turn a wrench...

No reflective stickers here. I probably could do most of this myself I can turn a wrench but honestly I need the truck back asap and I just don't have the time. I have 140,000 miles on it now. I found the parts I need elsewhere and ill have them put it all on and clear the codes. Ill probably save close to $200 on parts by buying them myself. I was supposed to have this inspected in June so made it almost 6 full months.

I am so glad we don't have inspections here. On the other hand, if it were up to the goverment, we'd all be driving Fiat 500's!

Holy Hell, those are some expensive repairs.

Maybe, I'm a little out of the loop, but why in the world will it cost $400 to replace a wheel bearing? A hub assembly is what...$100? And it's pretty painless, aside from that damn, f*ckin, obnoxious axle nut.

Stealerships...tsk, tsk, tsk.

Your inspections down there are stupid. I don't understand how your window not being able to go up and down, your heater core, and your blower motor have anything to do with the saftey of your vehicle. Do they check to make sure your cigarette lighter works too?

Just make yourself a list and go down it and you will be surprised how fast you will be able to get everything done... Once you get started I bet it won't take you long at all to get them done.

Yea the window thing is ridiculous. What if I have manual crank windows? What's the difference in grabbing the glass to move it up and down with a broken regulator and hand cranking it....

Here in Ohio we don't have inspections, so it's very foreign to me.

Well the wheel bearing/hub through the dealer is 270..the cheapest I could find one was a timken model and that was $196 and then 1.5 hours of labor. Although its not needed for inspection purposes I thought it was a good idea to have the axle seal done while they have that side all apart.

The window not being able to go down would be or could be a safety issue if I was stuck upside down in a crash and might be able to escape through the window but won't go down. The other things you listed are not part of the inspections and don't need to be fixed to pass.. they are simply things I need to fix at some point to get the truck back in working order.

Safety Inspections Bite!

Sorry to hear about your issues with nameless state bureaucrats and the rules they pass to shakedown the rest of us. I live in Virgina and we have annual safety inspections. There is a set checklists, lights, tires, check engine, brakes etc. Generally its not too painful, over the last ten years I've been hit for ball joints (OUCH!), brakes, too hazy headlamp lenses (give me a break!), worn tires, and a license plate bulb across three separate vehicles. What a racket. Most of the small stuff I can do myself--if I had time, but they always turn-up when I can't take the time and I have to pay the shop--or the wife is in a panic because the "CAR'S NOT SAAAAFE!". :owned:

Got the truck back today, dealer tried to get more money out of me than originally quoted. I got a call around noon saying they couldn't get my axle shaft out to replace the seal because of some collar that was rusted in there and preventing them from simply pulling it out. They had to drop the diff to get the clearance. Any way they called me say they needed another hour. After me doing some arguing about my quote and them being a flat rate shop and I shouldn't have to pay more because they can't get things done in time. It all shook out like this. I ended up talking to the manager and telling him that they needed to take the $53 they wanted to charge me for installing a light bulb and put it toward the axle. He was shocked and embarrassed that they were trying to charge for a bulb replacement. He told me he would make it right by me. While picking up the truck they tried again to charge me more ($1094) this time. So I ******* and they dropped it right back to $931 ( the quote amount) without batting an eye. Glad this episode is over.

And the hits keep coming..... so after driving the truck around this weekend trying to rack up 50 miles or more per the dealers request to help purge the codes or something so the new charcoal canister works the right way I'm leaving the parking lot of my grocery store and I see my brake light and ABS light come on. I took it home and tried to clear the code with disconnecting the battery but they won't go off. So now when I go back to the dealer to get my inspection sticker I'm sure I'm going to be hit with more repairs. I'm starting to hate this truck!
