I have a 2011 1500 Ram Laramie and as much as I love the truck the Uconnect is a little lacking. It wont do bluetooth audio and will not see my Android files. I was told I could update or upgrade it somehow. or is this something I have to do with new hardware?

I have an 09, pretty much the same headunit. The only way to get what you're looking for is to replace the HU. Crutchfield has a full write up on everything you'd need to replace it and still maintain the steering wheel controls, and also the Alpine system if you have it (mine does).

I've looked into it and done some research, but in the end , the stock HU works well enough for me now. In the future I might upgrade for the SD/USB/BT, but the BT phone part works better than anything else I've ever owned, and I just load the HD with all my stuff and head out. There's a place that sells a bigger HD for these, but I haven't filled the one I have yet.

I always suggest to those like myself with an older truck 2009-2012 to upgrade their headunit with an aftermarket one. Those radios were fine when they first came out, but with technology as it is, there’s no reason to stay behind. You don’t need to buy the fanciest one that they make, just get what you need, and enjoy. This is what I have which is wayyyyyyyyy overkill, but keeps me occupied lol.b4e6b47f16b88f3a9a4149815bfab1d7.jpg

Crutchfield is great for feature comparisons. I went Kenwood and it is awesome what all it does.

Do you use the Bluetooth for making calls? How does it work? The last couple times I've put in aftermarket head units (07 Edge, 08 Mazda 3) the BT for maiing calls was terrible. People couldn't hear me well. Does the OEM mic hook into it? Honestly, that's one of the things I like most about my OEM unit, the phone feature works great. I also like that the NAV puts the directions in the center console, but that's not an necessity.

Speaking for myself Bluetooth is a dream and unless I’m calling with my windows down, sound is same as oem. The main difference is that you can see my mic as I didn’t feel the need to integrate it into the headliner.

I as well have a 2011 Dodge Ram Laramie and have done extensive research on this issue. If you have the factory Alpine or Bose system that was offered a couple years in the Laramie it is a little more difficult and if you have the rear entertainment system offered in some Laramie’s that is another issue.

I choose to keep my MYGIG radio 730 RHR, I did find you can update items on the radio Gracenotes which is the album art and other items as well, but it doesn’t do all the art. The update is something you will have to do yourself, including downloading files on a disc and installing updates through a website. Some of the Mygig radios or popular ones put in jeeps got updates quicker than other models installed in Chrysler vehicles. The jeep models from what I researched had Nav updates and color updates as well.

I spent a tremendous time researching the radio ie… background software and such and decided on just keeping and upgrading speakers and using Android Auto through my phone. Not that the update would not be nice but just shifted directions and went with lift, tires, rotor, brakes.headlights,HID’s and caliper covers. The following website will let you check for updates and Gracenotes.
