Long tubes = more involved install, you need to replace your Y-pipe and if you need to stay emissions legal then you'll be buying a catted Y-pipe or having your stock cats fabbed into a y-pipe. They're exponentially more expensive but they net all around better gains. Gains vary based on which ones but I think I've seen they net around 25hp? Someone may correct me.

Brands: American Racing, Stainless Works, JBA

Short tubes: Much cheaper to buy, and bolt to your stock y-pipe, ie: no fab work and no relocating cats. Downfall is much lower gains, IMO not really worth the effort for the roughly 7HP you gain.

Brands: JBA and BBK

Yes it will.

This is taken from Auto Anything's website

"""For a variety of reasons that involve physics, it turns out that long tube headers do the best job building horsepower and torque from mid-to-high RPMs. These are great for high-revving machines and track terrors, but they do sacrifice some of the low-RPM power that most drivers depend on.
On the other side of the coin, shorty headers deliver more power horsepower and torque from idle to the mid-RPM range. This makes shorty headers perfect for your daily commute or hauling your boat up a hill. We'll also note that sometimes short tubes can be easier to install"""

As stated above, longtubes will always make more power than shorties.

Joe, is your truck a 6 speed or 8 speed? If you have an 8 speed, then you want to go with the ARH longtubes as they do offer an 8 speed specific Y-pipe both with or without cats.

If you have a 6 speed, then you can go with either JBA or ARH. JBA only offers a catless Y-pipe though, so if you need cats, then ARH is the winner.

You will gain roughly 25-30hp/tq from either of these longtubes, and closer to 12hp/tq from shorties. In the end, its better to save up longer and do the longtubes from the start. They will give you much better results.

Loss of low-end is really just a matter of educating yourself on primary sizes. Guys with N/A bolt-on HEMI's see 1 7/8" as better than 1 3/4" just because it's bigger. So yea you're going to lose all your velocity when you pump ur exhaust out into a a primary the size of a water main...

It all has to do with how your truck is setup.

1 3/4" headers will make more power in the low-mid rpms where a 1 7/8" header will show it gains mostly in the mid-high rpms. While the peak gains will be very close to each other on the dyno, the power curve will be a few hundred rpms higher with the larger primary size.

I run 1 7/8" headers on my shop truck because it is lightweight and has a 3400 stall converter with 4.10 gears to make up for the tq loss down low. My daily driver has 1 3/4" headers because they make more tq in the low-mid range which is where you want it on a heavy truck that sees more daily use. Supercharged and nitrous builds will also want to run the larger 1 7/8" primaries.

There is an application for each header. You just need to know what you want to do with the truck so that you make the correct choice for what size/brand header to buy.

A tuner is essential when adding long tubes, no?

Tuner is not absolutely necessary, but it will definitely help you get the most out of the headers. ARH dynod 24hp/24tq on a bone stock truck with no tuner.

Was that at the wheels or crank??
Nice numbers if at the wheels.
About the only thing holding me back from headers is my warranty..... I really like it.

Those were wheel hp numbers. The tuned guys are seeing closer to 30hp/tq from the ARH longtubes.

No kidding on that... I just installed the 1 3/4" ARHs on my 2014 and even with my un-calibrated butt dyno, I could clearly feel the performance bump.

Hey Matt I had a question for you about headers. I have the 8 speed with 3.21 gears. It's a 4x4 and I do alot of highway driving. Since I'm not gonna change gears and their in no torque converters for the 8 speed are 1 3/4" primary headers the best choice? Thanks
