So I was changing my 22's to stock 20" clads today. Front went on great, back not so much. Rear passenger side has one lug nut that did not want to come off, using everything I can to get this off and nothing. We'll eventually with breaker bar I "thought" I got it off till I looked at the lug nut and saw the threads were still inside it so I snapped it off! Are the threads replaceable separately or is it a unit a need?

You just need a stud. Remove the brakes and it's a $10 fix.

Ok cool, got so nervous and thought it would be something major. Will be calling dealet tomorrow, hopefully it's as cheap as you said.

It's your choice, but the dealer will rip you a new one price wise...

Lots of other cheaper options out there... I would also think of sourcing a thread chaser and run it on all the studs and wheel nuts, and load everything with some antiseize just so this will not be happening again.

My 2 cents...

Hi ewc,
These suckers are speced to 100 ft lb. Definitely +1 on the thread chase and anti-seize compound.

Yeah don't get it from the dealer just go to auto zone or advance and get one. You'll also need an open-ended lugnut to pull the stud through

Look into ARP wheel studs if you're going to buy new ones.

The lug nuts I have are after market and are open ended which I guess saves me money that way, although they are horrible lug nuts and will be replaced soon.

I went to dealer and bought two new ones for $35 but may call autozone see what they would charge and if it's way cheaper I'll return to dealer and get the others.

I'm pretty sure when I broke one on my cherokee a while back I paid like 10 dollars or less for a bag of 4 or 5 at autozone. Either way it'll be a lot cheaper than 18 dollars each lol

Pulling them through is not the proper way to install them but is the easiest method. You want to press them in if possible. There is a nice thread chasing kit Craftsman sells for $50, made in usa.

Just as a FYI, I sourced 20 Black Lug Nuts for this summer at ezaccessory.com for about the price you got your studs from the dealer...

They are really nice and high quality. I sourced my studs from a local Auto Parts and got them for about 2$/each. I only replaced the rear studs as the front ones were new with the wheel hubs I had replaced.

For the install, as per the Dodge service manual, just use an open ended nut and multiple oversized washers. Use the nut upside down so that the flat face will sit on the washers and pull the stud through it's seating area as straight as possible and until fully seated.

The factory torque on the wheels Lug Nuts is 135 lb/ft or 183 N/m. To be honest I put mine at 120 lb/ft and I have never had a wheel fly away on its own on any of my rigs.
The key is to tighten them in a cross pattern, going from one bolt to the one furthest away from the previous one. Tighten by hand first, and then with the torque wrench.

Serves 2 purpose to do it this way:
1. Ensures all bolts are equally tightened, and prevents any misshap...
2. By having, a uniform torque pattern, you prevent warping the brake rotors and the wheel rim (especially if you have high end mags).

Anti seize on the hub, the rotor where the rim sits, and on the studs will prevent further stickiness and allow for easy removal of tires.

Thanks for the help guys! Going be taking it apart Thursday since that's my next free time, hopefully I'll get it all done by that day as well.

I will be checking out that website for those lug nuts, I hate mine and need a nice new set. Any idea what size the lugs are that I need? Unless the website has the toll where you add your year make and model then nevermind.

warning:

Every manual i have ever read, warns against lubricating the wheel lugs, or studs. If a lug was to loosen, the lube would allow the lug nut to back off completely. Do not put anything on the wheel studs!!!!

If the threads are clean, properly torquing the lug nuts will promote easier removal when needed.

Glad it worked out easy for ya EWC88

Last summer when I had my tires put on my wheels still had the locking lug nut.
I was asked if I wanted them back on or a standard lug nut put on.

I said I'd like a standard lug nut put on.

Well... my jaw hit the floor when it came time to pay when I saw it added something like $40! to my bill for FOUR lug nuts! I told the guy that's almost friggin criminal.
