I have a 2022 ram 1500 5.7 hemi with 70k miles.

I went to drive the other day and it felt kinda like a diesel, and spit out code p0301. So I change the spark plugs, change out the ignition coil, change the oil. No changes. Took it to a mechanic friend, he checked it as best he could, tried several things, but again nothing fixed. On my way home a secondary code p1411 has now popped up and the engine is running rougher.

I saw a few places people talking about a lifter issue, but I’m not entirely sure how to check for that or what to do next other than drop at a shop that I really can’t afford, and of course my warranty just ran out like 400 miles ago.

Any ideas/help/suggestions is greatly appreciated

Use the search bar. There are dozens of threads on how to diagnose and what-do if your lifter is in fact DOA.

I suspect that is your issue, use the above to confirm.

I guess I’m just not savvy enough to know what I’m looking for, I try and just find a bunch about the hemi tick.

You will see two things referred to as the hemi tick. One is broken exhaust manifold bolts and the other is a failed cam and/or lifter. Yours would be the lifter.

Keywords to search:
Hemi Tick
Lifter
Cam
VVT Solenoid
And if you're optimistic after all that, then "Redline"

You just hit the mileage when the average cam wipe happens. The other forum was tracking mileage when can fails, they had the number at 70k to 130k on rams that get cam fails, which is not a lot but a significant number. Once you get a mis fire if it is cam/lifters there is not much you can do at that point but replace them. Mis fire on a cam usually means cam lob is worn to the nub.

Writing on the wall, both codes suggest lob on 1 is toast. Whatever it ends up as, it will require taking off heads or valve cover at a minimum. Might want to make some type of plans. A ram that new will have value even with this issue.

Ugh, I need some me help!

So I replaced all of the vvt solenoids when I took my manifold off when this happened. Got them from O’reillys. They were metal instead of plastic open, so happy about that. Once I got it all put back together no more misfire, but I had some other codes. I believe one was AFM not functioning, which is absolutely fine with me, I feel like I spent 4k so far trying to save 200$ in gas. Also spit out code p1411 secondary air injection. But it ran fine, and I couldn’t ever figure out the issue.

Well yesterday cylinder 3 started misfiring! So I took it completely apart again, took the vvt upto OReillys and they warranty’d it, also got a new coil. Put it all back together, and I’m still getting a cylinder 3 misfire! A few months ago when I had cylinder one go out I replaced all the spark plugs. So I don’t think that’s the issue. The only thing left I guess is the injector, but I’m running out of time money and patience. Can y’all offer me any advice at all? And I’m sorry I know I could probably get to the forms for hours and try to find something but I’m at work I got like a 2 Hour drive home, I don’t have time to be sitting around reading scratching my head.

Any help is so greatly appreciated thank you

Stop firing the parts cannon and learn how to troubleshoot and analyze.

This will likely remedy the wallet damage and frustration aspect, at least, for the short term.

There are many members here who have already played this game and would likely point you in the right direction.

Any idea who they are? I build houses, not very good with engines. I got a buddy that’s a mechanic so I just do what he says, but hasn’t been working apparently. He said it has to be the injectors to get that to try next, but that’s another hundo and worried it’s not gonna work either

the first thing you should have done is swap coil and plugs to see if code travels, so still do that even with new coil. If codes travels, there is go. Cant bypass this step.

Where did you buy the plugs from? If you got them off Amazon or Ebay, they might be your issue.
You can easily clean and check your injectors spray pattern at home.
There's a video in the first post, that is basically a duplicate of how i clean them.

Stop the parts cannon already. Stop buying parts and use what you already have to determine the best course of action.

If a cylinder has a misfire, inspect and swap plugs with a working cylinder. There are YouTube videos to learn what a plug should look like or find one of many threads here or post pictures.

No joy, swap coil packs with a working cylinder.

The fault will remain or move to the new location. If the fault moves, that plug or coil pack is faulty or the plug hasn't been gapped properly.

Pre-gapped plugs are not to be trusted. Verifying plug gap or gapping plugs isn't rocket science either.

Ok, so update….
New VVT
new plugs
New coil

No change.

If I’m not mistaken, please correct me if I am, the fuel injection would be the last piece of the puzzle? Although… I think I’ve noticed something really… Strange…

It seems like whenever I replace something, I clear the codes, the truck seems to be fixed and driving fine… for 1/4, maybe 1/2 a mile. Then the engine light comes back on, truck starts running like a diesel again etc.

So this got me scratching my head. Is it the code going off that’s causing the truck to run bad? Or is it throwing the code because the truck starting to run bad or… I just don’t know other than I think it’s weird that if I don’t clear the codes then the truck starts out rough and misfiring, but if I clear the codes then i have to drive it for a short distance before the engine light and physical signs appear.

The codes my Bluetooth obd are showing is p0303, p-0303-50, and p1411 (although I think the 1411 has been there a little while and I just haven’t quite figured it out yet

I had a friend stop by with a better obd reader than my little dongle, she said it’s saying there’s an issue with:
P1411- Secondary air injection system pump
P3449-variable vcm management
P0171-fuel system lean

Any suggestions on where I go from here?

Where are you buying your parts from???.
Pull 1 plug on each cylinder and do a compression test, and post your psi numbers if you're not sure what they mean.

O’reillys ….
And I have no clue how to do a compression test. Don’t I need a piece of equipment for that?

Yes you need a compression tester.
You can pick them up fairly cheaply, just make sure it has the 14mm adapter as that's the size of the plugs in a late model hemi.
There's lots of video's on Youtube on how to do a compression test.
