Hello all. New to this forum. Keep it short. Bought 2012 Ram Sport. Had bad cam/lifter. Had them replaced. 20,000 later, more noise. Replaced lifters. Retainers had come off of 2 of them. 10 times louder! Another set goes in. Not as noisy. Went on 1100 mile trip. Still noisy. Tore valve cover off and found my mechanic had broken the pad that the bolt goes thru to secure the rocker shaft. Replaced it with 3 washers, one of which was slightly bent to match the shaft. Also found the next bolt forward snapped off when I tried to loosen it. I have 4 new shafts and pushrods coming. Never worked on this type of motor before. Am I on the right track, here?

One more question....if that mounting pad is missing, would that affect the oil distribution in that shaft? My mind says the oil will flow out and around the bolt and washers my former mechanic put in place of the broken pad. That would reduce the pressure in the shaft and cause problems. Sound about right?

Pushrods by far are the number one reason why cam/lifter jobs fail, usually means they weren't cupped right in install. Read this thread... Literally happens all of the time, you are on the right track.

Here's a couple photos of what I found. Looks like I'll have 9 exta mounting pads when I'm done.

Lets have a pic of this broken mounting pad you're talking about. If it's the aluminium pad that the rocker shaft bolts to on the head, you might be looking at a new head,as they're pretty critical

I'm pretty sure I am using the wrong term for the broken part. It it the square piece that sits on top of the shaft and the bolt goes thru it. I also noticd in my pic that the wear pattern is overlapped by the washers, meaning there was either contact with the rocker, and or a geometry alignment with that rocker.

Ok, update time. Replaced 4 rocker shafts with new ones. Reused my pushrods as one of the new ones I ordered was missing the ball end. Put it all back together with no pocket pieces, and it actually started and ran. It was my first dive into this motor. On start up, slight tick which had subsided a great deal after a much needed burnout. Small, but fun. I just ordered some Lubeguard after reading a few posts. I can't back it up 100%, but I replicated my tick by sliding the rockers against the mounting blocks that hold things down. It was the same sound I have been hearing. I will give it a few hundred miles and do another update. Thanks to all for their input on this site. Tons of great knowledge here.

There is a factory tool called a Push Rod Support that holds them in place so this issue can't happen. I'm guessing most independent garages and driveway folks don't have one.

The pad on the rocker arm shafts should never be removed, although there seems to be a 'natural' tendency for some folks to pry them off.

This is the first time I've even heard of the mounting bolts breaking like that! I suspect they were bottomed out and jammed, which could happen if the mounting pad wasn't there. If they were over torqued I would expect the threads to pull out of the head.

By the way, they are three-step torqued: tighten to 7 pounds, then to 23 pounds, then back off 1/2 turn, and retorque to 23 pounds.

Dusty

There is so much jaw activity around oil, oil filters, bad lifters (although this has some validity), camshafts, bad design, etc,. yet folks who work on these engines everyday will mention that a rocker arm can cause a tick.

A piece of welding wire or straightened out coat hanger layed length wise along the head, then lean the pushrods up against it,will work in a pinch to keep them in line.

That wire trick would work. I tried to get some assembly lube on my way home the other night and some guy beat me to the last tube by about 10 minutes, so I used #2 Mystic grease to hold them in place. Also greased the new shaft and rockers with it to avoid a dry start scenario. I realize it's not the best idea, but when life hands you lemons....

That bolt was probably broken by the mechanic who changed the cam and lifters x 2. Came out with a lil luck and a pair of surgery forceps. Luckily. Hard to prove, but it was my first time in there.

Fun fact...the mechanic is a retired Mopar trained mechanic. You just never know who to trust. That's why I will be doing my own wrenching from now on.
Personally, I would be pretty bothered if I broke a bolt and left it. Even more so because I would definately know that it wasn't right.

I'm sure it could happen anytime. Crap happens, but no reason to leave something you know isn't right.

Update. Tick is back at idle, driving down the street, cruisin at 55. Only quiets down when MDS active. This makes me think there is a solution. I just don't have it. I realize those lifters bleed when MDS kicks in. So they get quiet. Anyone speculate or know what goes on internally when the lifter should be pumping up? SUPER frustrated. Didn't do this before mechanic replaced the right bank lifters. Shoulda left it alone.
