About a week ago I noticed an occasional faint but high pitched ringing sound when I was driving my truck. When I've tried replicating it I've found that it can only be heard between 1,500 - 2,000 RPM and 2,500 - 3,000 RPM, and in several different gears. There is no sound when idling, only when driving. I've also noticed it when coasting downhill with no throttle input. It's hard to pinpoint exactly where it's coming from, but I don't think it's coming from the engine/under the hood (but the sound is so high pitched that it's really hard to tell). Based on my research I have come up with these possible culprits, though I have been unable to find any forums where someone has described my exact issue:

- rear end
- oil pump
- power steering pump
- pulley's/belts (but if this was the case it seems like the noise would be constant and would still be heard when idling)
- transmission

I dropped it off at the dealer today for this and some other issues, but I just wanted to see if anyone has had the same problem and found a solution.

I have been searching this forum for this kind of (high pitch) Ringing sound which I just noticed while driving 25-30 MPH with my windows open. It's only sound when driving.. Unfortunately, I did not find any answers to this problem (that was first reported 8 years ago!). Does anybody has any idea where this ringing sound is coming from? thank you very much.

Wasn't loose. They are/were designed with stuff inside (they used to use cardboard, sand or springs) to eliminate any harmonics / slight vibrations in the shaft.

The F150 I had didn't have anything and it did indeed set up a harmonic in the rotation and "sang". New driveshaft and no more problems.

Try wrapping one layer of duct tape on the shaft , it may need it in a few spots .
But is easy to try , and reverse the process if no difference is found.

Last I looked under I've noticed quite a rust build up around the drive shaft and joints from driving up north country. I'd need to have them checked and definitely lube all joints. I hope i dont have to replace it. thanks.

the chirping sound just Disappeared all the sudden. On my next service coming up soon I'll have them check and definitely lube the area in question. once I back home (north) I'll have to scrap all the rust and treat the under carriage properly. thanks for all the respondents.
