HO Cummins, it is taking longer and longer to complete a DPF regeneration

Research e-torque before buying e-torque. If you change your mind and opt for a truck, ask for opinions if you haven't been on the board a lot, there is much to consider. For a car if longevity is a value, maybe consider a 6 cylinder non di turbo SUV, and no cvt transmission even better. Last I looked there were a couple options. Those mid sized SUV market is one of the best remaining vehicles being built these days, many options are still viable for longevity. Sadly most of them are electrical nightmares, no way out of that mess anymore.

6 cyl SUV gasser with turbo. Which make would you consider the most reliable? Any specific year?

Top of the heap imo would be forerunner but pre 2024 without the turbo, 2017 to 2024 forerunner very special vehicles maybe best ever. No cvt no turbo and engines with like no issues, and perhaps best of all less tech. My brother ordered a special one only made in Japan paid an extra ten grand for it didn't care, special edition trd pro forerunner zero inventory in USA at the time he waited and had it imported, nobody will ever get this vehicle from him unless they wreck it. Nissan Pathfinder, to their credit they freak'n dumped the cvt yeah team so now they have a regular transmission and a non turbo v6. It is different then forerunner, you would need to sit them both to decide, the forerunner is more like an older 4x4 and the Pathfinder is more like a boat on wheels. Either will tow what you want so long as it is south of 6k pounds. Of note same ilk I would avoid telluride. I havent looked much past these two, my wife tried to get me in the Pathfinder I did like it and they wanted to give me a great deal over 10k off, but one of us has to be a grown up since the wife was buying a vehicle we didn't need :)

I like the forerunner, it is in my top 5 vehicles ever made. Late Bronco's being number 1, older rav 4's being 2, older Rams being 3, late model forerunner til they ruined it in 25 number 4.

That is a very good list, would be mine too, except I like the Diesel G Wagons and the 4 Door Landcruisers/Lexus LX equivalent, pre 2023 non-hybrid too with the naturally aspirated V8. What got the new Bronco on your list, I have never looked at them at all.

Which ever suits you, path finder more comfortable and but trd more capable. Durango might be up there as well, I think you can get hemi w/o e-torque and v6 w/o it either, but I'm not 100%. Worth looking at one, but rumor is they disco'n it so not sure you want that route.

I don't think I'd ever get a new bronco from what I read. Man those 351w/e4od combo is just simple and suits me, not a lot of power but a lot of longevity potential. I never looked at land cruiser as I am/was working class, but yeah looks good as well.

Good gas mileage, ability to tow, can go confidently on rougher roads, good for long and shorter trips, find one of the Eco 1/2 ton Diesel pickups or the diesel Jeeps.
If he travels more than DD errands then it might work out ok. If he's having issues with emission on a Cummins from short trips the EcoD might not fair well either. Probably best to go with a gasser if the DD is a majority of the vehicle use.
The EcoD would definitely shine on the fuel economy aspect with road trips, owners with the Gen3 motors (Gen5 trucks) have reported back MPGs hovering around the 30. Even with Gen2 motor and the worse possible truck config for fuel economy (CC,6.4' bed, 4X4, 3.92 w/17" OEM tires) I still pull off 26-28 mpg easily.

You can still get a non e-torque Durango. That's what we're looking at now (between that and a Grand Cherokee L) for the wife.

Durangos are hard to beat, IMO. They'll still tow reasonably well, are SUPER comfortable with plenty of room, and dead nuts reliable.

Thanks, sir! I take such good advice seriously

Now, to figure out what one kind of lightly used vehicle will serve triple duty as a grocery getter, 200 mile round trips to Phoenix and practical for camping trips to Utah to fly fish. For now, anyways, a house cat will travel with me

Please everybody, help me figure this out. The LHM dealership I bought my truck from is chomping at the bit to buy it back from me. Scratch your head with me.

Pre-COVID 4Runner, whatever trim level is in your budget. Limited is the most luxurious but at the cost of some ground clearance. Any level of TRD will do what you want. SR5 will be the cheapest.

Stone simple V6 and 5A, takes regular gas, no turbos, no stop/start, limited techno-nonsense.

Bad news: $$$ because nobody makes a competitor and the Toyota Tax is very real. It's the last body on frame naturally aspirated SUV without stop/start, etc.

It's a completely idiot proof vehicle to get to 300k and beyond with minimal attention.

Idling makes the problem much worse. Try to avoid it except for cooling at the end of a trip.
I like additives for fuel and DEF, especially in winter.
Keeping fuel and DEF streams clean minimizes a lot of problems.
