Oh, and tires show 40 lbs in them, recommended 50-60???

Check you sidewall on the tire, tirerack says max pressure is 51 psi but they are not always accurate.
If it is 51 psi, I would go in the 48-50 psi range when cold - ie. before driving on them, not on a super cold day :)

"Cold" tire pressure setting is generally the tire pressure at 68 degrees F.

See the chart at the bottom of the page here.

You mentioned SW MO, if you are going to be in the Table Rock area then the 5.7 will get a work out and spin some RPMs but will do fine, especially with the 8 speed. There are some pretty good grades in that area depending on the roads you take.

Be safe and have fun!

Enjoy your trip! 45° here in northern Illinois.
That looks like a great destination. May I ask what campground you are located?

I don't have anything to add other than my thanks to everyone for a very educational thread!
My wife and I have been thinking of buying a camper, probably smaller, and it's great to know that we'll be able to pull it with our truck without exceeding its capacity. Our truck is the same as the original poster's so now I have a real world example of what we could purchase.

It worked great for a weekend getaway. Averaged about 10 mpg, but gotta pay to play. Sweet spot for me was about 60 on the interstate. Stayed around 2k -2.5k RPMs in 6th gear unless on interstate. I found another camper in front and just followed his tailwind the ride home. Might do another trip next weekend!
Now after unloading and cleaning, I’m having a couple beers watching a movie in the camper
Here’s the temps after everything was warm and running good

I have been around that area all my life! My grandma lived in Cape Fair. Plan to camp there soon!

We lived close to Cape Fair on Y40. Only about 4 miles to CF as the crow flies and 16 miles by road. It is really pretty around there. We lived there for a few years and are now in Texas. I do miss the views and Table Rock. Could go down to our dock and catch a mess of big crappies anytime we wanted. Great motorcycle roads there also. But, we are closer to family here, and winters are nice.

Glad it all worked out well for you.

Nice man. Glad all worked out well. All those temps look good too.

I did the same yesterday. We were out this weekend also, got home, unloaded truck and camper, then cleaned the inside of the camper, washed the exterior, then washed my truck.

After all that I was pretty tired, but took the stang for a quick run since it's been a while, cleaned the interior of it, then I was officially done. Lol.

A good and full weekend. You couldn't have asked for nicer weather.

Do those 8 spd transmissions all run that hot? 190* is not outrageous, but does seem high considering the outside temp. I know the 8 speed in our Durango runs about that same temp & it drives me crazy. With the bypass removed my 6.4 2500 6 speed was running about 130-140* pulling our 13k camper this weekend. That is a much better range if you ask me.

This I do not know. I think it is pretty average as far as I recall. But I don’t look at temps usually.

190 is not hot at all, it's on the cool side as far as I know. My truck does the same pulling a medium trailer for hours on end. Without a trailer, it sits around 180 or so.

130 is absolutely nuts and does not sound right. Are you sure that's what you're getting? Maybe a temperature sensor went AWOL or something?

You seem kind of set on doing this with what you have instead of the optimal setup despite the advice given here. It could work or end up like this ....

Nice visual. I have been told their is a difference between towing something and pulling something. The pulling. Pulls the truck apart. Lifetime warranty on metal is good. Only if the humans live to enjoy it. I would rather not have a lifetime warranty but have the right stuff. Ignoring others advice is not wise. They have been down the road before you. You came here because you had a question. As I see the same thing repeated. You dismiss it. You can ignore the answers. That is your choice. Remember. None of us are paid to be here. We all are here to help. Help without a corporation backing us. Help without trying to make a sale. Help just because we have been there and are kind. You joined a forum for a reason. I always join to learn. I have been in forums since 99. I have been a moderator many times. I have been the administrator a few times. The knowledge is real. Don't put your family in harm's way. Camping can be fun. You spent money on a nice trailer. Do the right thing. Please. Please take the advice and make the changes. Or get a smaller camper. Money is nothing without life. If you love the truck the way you have it. Sell the trailer and get a RV. Then tow the truck. Whatever you do is up to you. The only thing I haul is me. Stay safe. Don't want something to happen that could of been avoided.
