After my 25 mile commute to work this morning:
20260311_054423.jpg

Wanna read something wild?

Yesterday evening, was telling my nephew about fixing my high temp issue. He said he noticed his '18 Laramie with 140k miles running near 230°, and just yesterday noticed a stain on the drivers side of the curb stop where he was parked. When he checked his coolant level, it was down a bit. He had some pint bottles of water, and he said he added about 3 bottles worth to top off the radiator.

I said that was about how much I added when my radiator went south, and to check his radiator below the upper rad hose for wetness or staining. He sent me this pic:

Bingo! He is the next winner of Your-Radiator-Just-Shat-The-Bed Lottery....lol.

That makes 10 or so failures that I know of since mine died last year, that had leaks in the same area.

Wild

He has not changed his coolant, so you all know how my weekend will be.

Moral of the story:

Keep an eye on your temps, and if you see coolant temps in the 220° to 230° range, and you're not exercising the skinny pedal, or towing heavy, or running up grades, etc., check your coolant levels and components for problems.

Also, keep some basic tools and supplies on hand, just in case. Me having that gutless thermostat gave me the ability to not overpay at the parts store for a poor-quality replacement t-stat. I was able to wait for the one I wanted, and bought an extra.

Quick update:

I finally got a chance to run my truck on the interstate ~ 75 MPH, and the highest coolant temp I saw was 204°, and it was not there very long.

Mostly saw 192° - 197° with a couple short 199° blips.

Yes, having extra parts on-hand is good. But my Nephew will be using my spare 192° thermostat for his radiator changeout tomorrow.

But, it's all good, I'll just re order

I'm gonna try to document his change out, because his coolant will have been in there almost 150,000 miles.

I will see just how good his old coolant looks, and if he has any casting sand junk like I found in mine.

So, stay tuned. New thread coming.

I’ve got some moog upper and lower control arm bushings , plus trans and motor mounts for a 73 b100, the van has been gone for 24 years or so.
Now I said this , I’m gonna put these parts in the truck tool box, so if I run accross someone somewhere in traffic , they will get free gifts.

Something I found out when I preemptively replaced my water pump and thermostat, the new OEM thermostats are 5-deg hotter than the 'old' ones.

Truck used to run at ~203/204-F; new OEM thermostat, ran at 208/210-F. I ended up getting a 195-F thermostat (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000C809FQ). I'm sure it isn't 195, but the truck runs about 198/200-F.

I do have a tuner, so I did adjust my fan temps down to 208-F on, 200-F off.

I didn't like the hotter temp of the new OEM thermostats either.
Hello may ask what tunner you have I would like to have one to change when my fans would turn into I run very hot 225 to 230 cools down if I turn the ac on but that makes the fans come on when I do that

@T Ram 20, you might want to look at your engine a little further.

I prefer NOT to run 220°-230°. Perhaps you have something else going on.

Not sure your circumstance or driving habits, but mine had been running hotter than I like for a good bit before I figured out what the deal was.

Good luck finding out if you have another issue.

"Cools down when I turn on AC" indicates a bad mechanical fan clutch

I have electric fans
So your clutch fan has been deleted?.

Have heard of that mod, but I have a locked pcm, and I would want it tuned for a lower temperature threshold.

I would love to buy an unlocked pcm for mine, but there's plenty of other stuff I need to get done first.

Fans should already be on at that temp without ac on!!!

That's what I think too. There's got to be a temperature sensor switch somewhere. Whether the engine temperature switch controls it or there is a separate temperature switch relay, I'm still looking into it

Nowadays, all controlled by the PCM.

Would be very surprised if it's not PCM driven.
