Is this the hemi tick or normal?

The frequency and pitch sound bottom end. A little cold piston slap on startup that typically goes away when the engine starts to warm up.

I don't think I've ever heard a hemi that didn't have it, to some extent.

This is a 2022 Ram 2500 6.4l. Is this the hemi tick or just normal engine noise? I didn’t even notice it, but my wife brought it to my attention.

Cold start, phone on front left tire: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pTSHh3qpbbLcDMuIisEt7Tifb4LMClrT/view?usp=drivesdk

Thank you! Let me know if any other videos would help!

You need to take a video from underneath the engine at warm idle for like at least a minute, better two or more. Warm idle tick is hemi tick, cold start tick is dry tick or bolts, for dry tick there are answers esters plus moly. You take the video from underneath to stop white noise. So far I haven't heard anything that bad, last vid was the best but take it easy and let the recording device do its job. Last vid all is normal.

@Burla here is a video. It had only been sitting for about 10 minutes after I headed back out.

pretty clean boss, what oil do you use? I'm trying to figure why you think there is an issue, I assume you are hearing something.

Thanks! I’m just nervous about the tick. I just bought the truck as a CPO. It’s been 8 years since I’ve owned a hemi. There is a tick, but I think that’s it’s just normal noise based on the help in this thread!

Which oil and filter are you using, and what oil change interval?

This thread is worth reviewing. After reviewing the first page and poll results, jump to the end.
Reading it backwards will likely provide the latest and greatest trends, which may have changed a bit over the life of the thread.

I just bought it, so I’m not sure what was used before. I will review it, thank you!

Maybe I missed the detail, but what is the mileage?

The usual SOP with any newly purchased used vehicle is to, at a minimum, change the oil & filter to a quality brand synthetic for both.

And then all the other fluids that are even remotely close to a change interval based on mileage.

This is one of the cheapest insurance policies you will ever buy, with the highest return on investment.

And, welcome to Ram Forum.

That's a great low mileage, and less chance that someone has messed it up yet.

Have you verified all the fluid levels yet and verified how clean the engine oil looks on the dip stick? Unless it looks extremely clean and you're very confident that it is a good quality synthetic, I would change it ASAP.

I've found that a different oil and LubeGard make a noticeable difference on my Hemi for cold starts and unknown noises.

We have a synthetic oil thread and a filter thread for you to learn the preferred selections of the members here. Again, I would read the first page or two, then skip to the end and continue reading backwards.

That 6.4 sounds pretty good.

Almost as good as it would sound in my 1500.

I am planning on doing the oil this weekend even though they just changed it. I will do PUP with lubeguard and a wix filter.

I’ll try to do the differentials next weekend. Do you think that I should do that transfer case fluid too?

Spend some time reading the synthetic oil thread and the oil filter thread and then decide.

I switched to 5W30 last year and have been happy with higher oil pressure and a quieter engine.

Depending on where you live, you could verify the transfer case fluid level and relative lube condition before making that decision.

If you live in snow country like I do, unless the level and quality looks perfect, I would change it as an unknown.

Others may feel differently and YMMV.

If you can get your hands on 5W-30 Redline, the 6.4's love it,but if not 0W-40 Pup and Lubegard are an okay combo in the 6.4. By your video's i don't think you have anything to worry about,as it sounds pretty good for a 6.4.

Thanks for reassurance! I think that I can order it to the oreillys right down the road from me.

What gear oil do you recommend for the differentials?
