Hi All,

So I recently bought this 2017 Ram 1500, and I didn't notice it had a tick. Its only there when the engine is somewhat cold.

I did find at least one broken manifold bolt on the passenger side, so it might only be the exhaust leak. However, I notice the exhaust leak on cold starts and after a min or two it turns into the tapping you can hear in the video.

Once the engine is warmed up after a 5 min drive or so, the tick is gone and the engine sounds very healthy. The truck only has 72000 Km's (~45000 Miles) so I really don't think it is the lifters but I am just a paranoid person, so it really bothers me.

Another thing I should mention is that the previous owner racked up a lot of idle hours (~1600) which I have learned can accelerate lifter and cam wear. This is another red flag for me.

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Alkali

You are letting our site's horror stories get to you.

Guys that don't have any issues don't share stories of how well their trucks work. It's just the ones that do have issues that share.

IMO, nothing to worry about, just get that leak fixed when you can.

This, and perhaps consider a good oil & filter strategy, too, if need be!

Any recommendations? I was planning on switching from 5w-20 to PUP 5w-30. Were i live we have limited options on oil and filters so i can't get my hands on Amsoil or Redline oils. Also no wix filters sold in my area. Was thinking about using the Fram Ultra. Any thoughts?

Do you have any advice for verifying that it is not the lifters? thanks

Check if you have any bolts missing on the exhaust manifolds. That should be the quickest way to verify. I had broken bolts on my 2016 at around 50k miles and it is incredibly common.

You could send an oil sample out to BlackStone Labs and cut the filter open and inspect for metal particles.

Stethoscope on the injectors then the block or manifolds or something like that. Stethoscope will be really dang loud on the injectors so be careful with that haha.

But if it was the lifters, the sound would not go away when the truck is warmed up like you said in your original post.

Using a scope a real good technician can tell by the combustion waveform if you're suffering from excessive cam lobe wear, but by noise alone it's tough to detect a noisy lifter in an already noisy engine environment.

It's probably the broken manifold studs tapping. PP 5W-30 and Fram XG2 are good to go. The filter change sucks no matter what size you use so might as well use the larger one. Cover the k-frame crossmember and steering rack in grocery bags or something similar before removal. Fold it upwards to trap any spills and cleanup will be minimal.

I use plastic grocery bags as well, then go through an underbody car wash. Never have seen any oil dripping.

Hello,
I have a 2017 Rebel with the 5.7 hemi.. I've been running Castrol 5w-40 full synthetic since the first oil change. I change it around every 6-7K. I just turned 326K on it without codes or the tick. I live in Arizona where its HOT, all the better!!

326k miles! How long have you been running the 5w40?

Post a pic of the odometer, that's a helluva testament to what the Hemi is capable of.

I did ziplock for a while, but realized with a little care, and not using the 20-500 in my 4x4, I generally only have a few drips to clean with a rag before I crawl out.

I have dropped the dang filter once or twice, and that makes a mess, but I found the bag tended to make it harder, as my fingers get oily, and the bag is oily, so then there are 3 layers of oil between my fingers, and the filter, and I get like 0.01 degrees of rotation per hand twist, versus just ragging it up when I'm done.

No, i could order it. i ended up going with PUP 5W-30.
While i have you, could you weigh in on my latest post about this issue?
These guys in Edmonton are the cheapest place to get Lubegards BioTech Engine Oil Protectant from in Canada.
If you order 12 bottles it offsets the shipping costs.
I just phone them,as i've found that's the easiest way to get it.
