The way I look at it is, metal absorbs more heat, therefore with the engine running the metal tube (K&N 77) heating up will increase the temperature of the air flowing through versus the plastic one (K&N 57) not getting as hot. How much of a difference that will make, I don't know. I've always had the plastic ones and they have been good to me. Also, I've read some people complaining about the metal ones making a lot louder of a whistling/whining noise as opposed to the plastic ones. Hope that helps! I'm sure someone with a bit more knowledge will chime in eventually though.

To get the best performance I went with the K&N 57 series CAI and I like it. It isn't loud until you put the pedal to the floor, then you can hear it pulling in a lot of air. The only deviation I made was to the breather hose, instead of connecting it to the breather tube, I installed a separate small breather filter in the hose, and wire tied it to my A/C hose.

Is there any benefit to having the breather hose on its own air filter?

From the different forums I've been on I've seen a lot of guys do it in their trucks, I just never really understood why. I'll keep looking into it...

I did it to my truck because my PCV system is internal so I can't justify a catch can. Instead I took the breather hose, that connects normally to the CAI inlet tube, and installed a separate washable air filter in the end of the hose. Now fresh air can be drawn into the oil filler and circulated thru the PCV system. This way I don't have the CAI inlet tube pulling oily air into the inlet tube when the throttle body valve opens. Now I do not have to worry about oily air dirtying my throttle body.:peace::waytogo:

I was looking into the K&N 57 because like people said, plastic absorbs less heat than metal, so the air is colder. I ended up going with the S&B CAI because of the higher praise. Now I've never had a K&N but my father, who has a K&N said that the S&B felt like it gave a better response and power increase. Either way it seems to be a great intake.
You can never go wrong with K&N, they're great intakes especially for the price.
