Okay, my 11 year old saved for 2 1/2 years and bought his own kayak. Who’s using what to haul? Looking at bed racks, but damn, they’re expensive. Open to alternate ideas.

Check out the access adarac, it looks like the cheapest option besides a hitch mounted extender.

We got my son a 10' for his bday. I've just been putting it in the back to carry him to the lake and drop him off. On trips we'll carry it in the 5th wheel which isn't ideal but I'm not putting it on the back bumper where I cant see it.

I got a cheaper headache/ladder rack made by apex for like 100$ if I'm not mistaken. It mounts sturdy as **** but being adjustable width had cheesy pinch bolts. I wanted it to eventually be permanent for offroad stuff so I welded it. I leave it on all summer and take it off in winter. Having the bed open is nice compared to stuffing these in the 5-7 bed ddb0e806b0e224a00c9c0b5a840d1aa6.jpg463060d3833b6d0f20dab69989e854ba.jpg14885c9c53960305ac5892e265871a3a.jpg

I don't go through the trouble of loading them on my roof racks, too much work. Ratchet straps does the job and is much faster. Hauled 3 of them on a 350 mile trip to the Keys and back, doing 80 a good portion of the way. Have never had any issues.

Ratchets in the bed, or in the travel trailer. We get 3 inside the trailer wrapped in blankets, so they won’t scratch everything up. It’s a pain in the butt getting them in/out.

I have a couple of 9 footers that can just slide in the bed and hang out the back. For the 16 footer I have a ladder rack that I bought at northern tool for about $100 that I can take on and off as needed with some clamps I got at Amazon. Kind of a pain to move the toolbox to add the ladder rack, but because it's cheap it leaks rusty water out when it rains so I don't like leaving it on the truck.

I get so much amusement at little truck beds with things hanging out of them... I still can't understand why anyone would buy a pickup with a 4 or 5 foot bed... What's the point...

8' bed with a 10' kayak... Not much of a problem there! Open tailgate, red flag, and one ratchet strap and you're on the way to the lake!

I run a pair of heavy straps in an X going between stakepockets. I don't normally do it that way unless I'm hauling two kayaks. But here is a picture of a single. Normally they don't balance up there so well unless unless they are strapped down but it leaves you a little room for some gear.20180528_074221.jpg

I have done a couple things with my last pickup, which was a Nissan frontier. Haven't done anything yet with my 2500. But here are two options. 1. Buy good quality lumber(#1 grade cedar, redwood, doug fir) and cut the uprights to fit in stake pockets then build out your own rack. Use good quality screws and gorilla glue.
2. (And this is probably what I will use for my 2500) build a rack out of 2" PVC that can sit in the bed and just strap it down. Worked great for my other truck. Easy to pull in and out. Sturdy and weatherproof. I'll take pictures later when I go out back where I have it stored. I even bought the Yakima cradles to attach to it, but not necessary on most cases.

Our set-up has evolved over the years. It started off with loading everything on top of a Tahoe. From one canoe to 2 canoes and a kayak all on top of that thing. Now we use a trailer because I'm tired. The trailer can hold 8 boats and it's a lot nicer being able to hook up and go. There's a large box that has all our supplies locked inside

I run a roof rack for my kayak and my paddle board. It’s nice because it keeps the bed empty for camping stuff or bikes. Have done multiple trips to Pismo and other beaches. 80+ mph and they don’t move.

IMHO, straps of any kind are useless unless you have them looped through something on the kayak so it absolutely cannot slide out the back. Twice I’ve seen kayaks come off the vehicle and careen down the road in front of me. Both times while I was on a motorcycle, and both cases had straps, even ratchet straps, that loosened as the load shifted and settled in. At the very least get or make a harness to fit the back end of the kayak, similar to wheel straps used by tow truckers.

best,
DG
