Hello all! I’m starting a tread to keep track of my MPG on my upcoming family trip.
Going to go from NJ to FL then FL to GA then back to NJ. I’m estimating around 3,000 miles total including the times spent in each state driving around.

I have a 2015 1500 with 5.7 4x4 3.55 6 speed and always use mid grade fuel. Stock it came it 17” however I have a set of factory 20” so I know my speeedo is off by 4-5%. Only mod currently I have a mufflex bolt muffler with a dump by the rear wheel. I think I’m going to put the peace of tailpipe back on the has the resonator on it or perhaps even just putting the factory muffler back on...I’m sure my wife would be happy about that.

Just for fun let’s see guesses on overall MPG as well as guesses on MPG on the long legs of the trip.

More updates to come in a few days when the road trip starts.

I’d say 15-17. What size tires did you go with when you went with bigger rims?

I agree with @liftedpsd2010, you're probably gonna linger in those high-teens.

And that's if you aren't traveling in 4WD the whole way there , otherwise higher.

Are you going to be towing anything?

I don’t foresee having to switch over to 4WD on my way unless a storm rolls in I’ll leave my transfer case in 2WD. I won’t be towing anything. It’s going to be a total of 4 persons and a dog. Myself, wife, 2 kids. Then everyone’s luggage. I’ll actually to a gas fill up and weight the truck empty at my local CAT scale since I’ve been wanting to do that for awhile anyway, then do a loaded weight...I’m guess it will be about 700LBS-800LBS of persons, dog and cargo.

Also some more amplifying information current oil percentage. Current oil is Penzoil ULTRA platinum with Royal Purple filter and current paper air filter element condition does not seem to be too bad however I think I might just pick up a brand new one tomorrow. It was last changed at the begening of this year.

I'm gonna say 16. I think liftedpsd2010 has it pretty well nailed at 15-17. That's right where I sit for highway mileage. I have the 3.92's, but you'll be hauling more weight. You might jiggle the 18-19 range on certain legs depending on route and terrain, but I'm thinking overall and especially if you do some stop and go sightseeing it could drop some.

Ohh ok my bad. I’d still guess 15-17 depending on how fast you drive.

I usually do about 5mph over the posted speed limit on the freeway in cruise control depending on traffic and weather conditions. So I’ll expect to be going pretty much 70mph the whole way

When I am on the highway/Freeway at 60 to 70 mph, I get in the low 20's. I do have the 8-speed with 3.92 gears though. Does the ZF transmission make much of a difference? I expect it probably does since it can hold the engine in the sweet spot for mileage better.

From what I understand the ZF transmission helps out a lot. It’s nice that you have it matched up with 3.92 gears. I bet it gets up and moving quick.

I have 15k miles on my 17 ram 1500 cc 2wd. From the very beginning with zero miles until now my average is 15.6 I drive hard tho. And live about 2 miles from work. The 8 speed is amazing.

You are going to loose mpg in the DC area due to traffic if you drive through during the day. I suggest taking the 495 beltway. North and South Carolina the traffic always seemed to move at ,,80 + mph which will also kill your mileage.. although, as stated, on certain legs you'll see a bit over 20 mpg but I suspect your avg will be around 16 mpg.

I’m going to be leaving the NJ area at around 12 noon and drive straight to our hotel in SC. Phone says 8.5 hour drive, not including traffic and stops.

I am in far north jersey, in fact new York state is 15 minutes from me. Took about 20 hours to my parents just outside Orlando.i would leave around 10 pm and drive straight through when the kids were younger. When they were older, we had more stops and would spend the night in marrietta Georgia. Approx 16 hour drive with pit stops s of course Cracker Barrel stops.

Btw, I'm an old navy guy myself, where are you stationed ?

I’m currently stained at NSA Lakehurst which is part of JB MDL, Joint Base Mcgire/Dix/Lakehurst. FC1 LPO of the Auto Hobby Shop.

We are planing on leaving at 12 noon on the 12 since we will be pulling our kids out of school and that won’t count against them. I’m not looking forward to the drive though WA and VA. I’m hopping for not much traffic but we will see.

We where going to leave on the 13th and get to FL on the 14th but that would mean dropping the doggy off and headed straight to Orlando...leaving on the 12th at noon gives us some more time before headed to Orlando.
