Key Fob Gone - Programming a new key fob

2014 Ram 2500 Limited - Push to start


So, my one and only key fob is gone. Truck is currently just a nice large brick until Sunday.


I have a key fob, OBD2 to RJ45 cable - RJ45 to Lightning Adapter that should be here sunday.

Truck also has a Ez Lynk Auto Agent 2.



Will I be able to program a key fob without being able to turn the truck to the " On " position? It doesn't seem so in the doc's I have read.

If I cannot turn the truck to the " On " position. Any advice?
Can't afford to take to dealer. Can't afford to have it towed.

I have done google searches, did a search on the forum before posting but I failed to find anything relevant.

Not sure about your setup but using my autel km100 and or icon scanner from harbor freight I was able to program keys with all keys lost.However with a regular scan tool you will need to know your pin where as the autel it does it for you. If all fails have a mobile locksmith come out and do it for you instead of towing it somewhere.

I am hoping I can do it with an App like AlphaOBD or Jscan or whatever variant. I am hard wiring into the OBD2 port, so I am hoping that works.

as for your pin if you dont have it before i got my autel i used a android app called pin pull for chrysler.

In a 2014 both Alfa and Jscan can pull the pin.

Both can also program new FOBs, no prob.

Jscan can even do 5th gen. I did it recently with Jscan, In 2022 Durango RT with push button start. It showed as having 3 keys programmed, but only came with 1 from the dealer. I didn't like knowing that there were 2 more floating around out in the wild.
So, I deleted all keys from its memory, then reprogrammed the original and a used one from Ebay



Also, on a 2014 Ram, Xtool, Autel, ThinkCar and a few other scan tools can program Key fobs. Xtool can pull the pin, but I haven't tried it with the ThinkCar. I've been told that it can, but haven't needed to do it since I started using the ThinkCar tool.

When I try with the Innova 7111 it says "dealer only function", for both pulling the pin, and programming a fob.

Im not familiar with any direct rj45 to OBD2 adapters, nor have I any idea what kind of programming or software might be needed to get a laptops Ethernet adapter to recognize and work with the OBD2 interface.

For a wired connection, some guys have used a OBD Link SX USB adapter with the Windows version of AlfaOBD.

AlfaOBD is designed to connect to a standard Bluetooth or USB device but it has a manual connection ability where you may be able to select com ports.

I'll check, next time I fire up the PC. I'm using the stupid phone ATM.

The OBDLink Sx is fast and secure, and using the PC has many benefits such as easy management of backup files, screen captures and easy switching between different full-sized screens.

Also, following website directions or switching to your own notes or log files is simple.

For the windoze phobik, the OS is modified and performs only as directed. Microsoft has lost their ability to manipulate all of my PCs.

Anyone who is interested in reclaiming their PC or stupid phone ownership, please ask via PM because either type of device is simple to liberate.

As for special actions to connect, only the usual protocol used with AlfaOBD.

Connect the OBDLink to the OBD2 port, power up the PC, connect the USB, and then start AlfaOBD and click on connect.

Unless following this precise order, the connection process to your vehicle will usually fail.

The SOP for tweaking with AlfaOBD is to limit the number of changes per session.

This is a safe practice methodology that I usually employ especially when trying new or non-standard tweaks but sometimes...

Whenever the dealership has performed warranty work, had the battery disconnected and has re-flashed the BCM, I make several changes in one session.

LED configuration settings is performed in one session for low beam, high beam, CHMSL cargo lights, and reverse lights. I usually remove the fog light dropout with the LED tweaks.

Same for the DRL configurations and I have a few more tweaks with a Canadian truck.

My mistake about the Manual Connection options in AlfaOBD.

It allows a terminal function for reading/clearing faults, sending commands, and adjusting the OBD protocol format used.





The AlfaOBD Advanced Mode allows a manual selection of the interface type.




I have no experience tweaking these settings.

Spot on, best advice you will get. One trick that sometimes works is to put the new FOB close to the start button and see if you can fool the vehicle into going into ACC or run.

If you need scan and programs for other stuff, worth buying, but for just doing a FOB, the mobile locksmith will be cheaper. Second point, use an OEM FOB direct from Mopar. 80% of the after market Amazon and clone crap won't pair and almost all of the ones that do, then kack within 6 months.

Adapter - Search RJ45 to ( Whatever adapter ) I purchased a lightning one since I am a moron and thought since I couldn't turn the thing to the " On " position that I would need to hardwire.

I just realized that when I answered your original question, I didn't explicitly state so and point out where but I assumed you would pick on on it.

If you deleted ALL the keys from the trucks memory, then it stands to reason that they won't work any more. So, they will no longer turn the truck on. So, in order to program the next fob, you will HAVE to do it with the truck switched off.

You don't need the truck switched on to program key fobs. It happens with the truck still in the OFF position. That is the case in both push button trucks and in tip start trucks.


Just buy a setup that is known to work. Trying all this weird, untested and unproven stuff is just begging for a tow truck fee to the dealer for a computer reflash!

After I read your post i went out to my truck to verify that my memory isn't failing.


I deleted my key fobs, then waited until the truck computers all turned off. Then I went back in and reprogrammed both of my key fobs

All without having a current, programmed fob and without ever switching the truck on.

If you get past the link/adapter issues and establish a connection with Alpha or JScan, be sure the replacement FOB is of decent caliber. I've attempted to code and failed using a cheaper amazon FOB. After ordering the linked to FOB as the second replacement, JScan was able to successfully code the new key, error free.

I know this isn't what you're wanting, but I bought my '18 3500 used with only one fob, the kind that looks like a flash drive. Just to have an extra, I had locksmith make me an old school key for about $80, which I keep in my purse. Don't go to the stealership.
