This is truly the way the ram lsd works in both the 1500 and the HD trucks. It is not a locker like the GM trucks use. It sucks but that is what we are stuck with. Someone above said it, they use a very low preload on the clutches so any little indifference in traction and it will light up one tire. Also putting the wheels up in the air and spinning them does nothing, you might feel a little resistance but it will act like an open differential in the air.

I have to ask two questions then
Question number one is what good is limited slip or as Ram says anti spin differential if it pretty much is the same as an open differential? Question Number two Is why in the hell would they put a rear that is that useless in there trucks and call it an anti spin differential? I really can't see any benefit to having this rear end in my truck if this is truly how this P.O.S. is supposed to work.

It does help a little bit, but not much. I wish they offered a type of locker like GM has but you get what you get with ram I guess.

The truck has 7700 miles on it. There is no LSD additive tag on the rear end which I thought was strange. I was told that the truck doesn't use a clutch system and then I read they do. Everyone you talk to tells you something different. I could easily tell by pulling the cover but I am not going to touch it until I take it to the dealer. I could tell by talking to the service manager on the phone he was pretty much clueless so it should be fun. I was trying to explain the difference to him. I looked at the Auburn diff as well. If my truck actually has the L.S.D. like it's supposed to and they just suck that bad the Auburn is probably the unit I will put in. I don't know how Ram could get away with calling there diffs a anti spin if this is the way they say they are supposed to work......we will see on Wed.

could be burnt out by now and thats y it slips. iv seen street only jeeps with a lsd at 20k and thell turn there rear diff fluid strait black by then. added heat and clutch material contamination can make them burn out faster than people think.

My truck doesn't have a limited slip lube tag on the differential even though it's supposed to be a limited slip. I have never seen a limited slip rear end that didn't have the tag on it. I have had the truck since new and never abused it. It has been babied since day one. There is no way that the clutches are burned. Do you know if it's supposed to have a limited slip lube tag? I know it's a long shot but maybe my truck got the wrong rear end?

As far as I know ram doesn't put tags on their axles like you are thinking. If you look at the Barcode tag on the axle tube it will say the gear ratio and a code for standard or limited slip.

Ok thx for the info. I was kinda afraid of that. I checked the part number on the axle and from what I have been able to find it is the right part number. I was hoping that since it's just a sticker they put on there someone might have grabbed the wrong one. I am surprised I haven't seen more posts about people complaining about this. I haven't pulled my boat yet but where we have to launch is extremely steep and wet. I hate a 4X4 that just sits there and spins one wheel. I will probably put in the Auburn if this is just the way this thing is. Thx again for the info.

Well, I got the same rear axle, and I have never had any issues with it. But then again, I don't go spinning my tires all the times either.

I pull anywhere from a 3300 lb boat/trailer combo up to a 7000 lb camper, on dirt/gravel/asphalt/concrete/rain, and it works as it should.

NOW, the chevy I traded in on my Ram had the G80, and when it started acting up (as in when backing my 3300 lb boat/trailer thru my side yard, the right rear tire would spin, the rear diff would click, and the traction control light would flash, and sometimes it would not unlock when trying to back up, so much so I had to gun the engine just to back into my driveway), the dealer flat out told me it is not supposed to work in reverse, and they refused to fix it. I don't think they even ever pulled the diff cover to look into it. It was still under the bumper to bumper warranty (~ 25k miles).

After fighting them for 9 months over it, I traded it in on the Ram.

I don't go spinning my tires either normally unless I am trying to see if works at all. I got stuck pulling out of a driveway a car could pull out of and had to back up and go a different way or put it in four wheel drive. As I said where I have to launch my boat is one of the worst ramps I have seen. I have seen a lot of two wheel drive trucks have to be pulled up it. They keep a tractor near by in case it is needed. I know it's a guy thing but I always took a lot of pride that my Z71 when right up.it every time. As I said I go camping in places where you actually need a 4X4 to get there and a good limited slip comes in very handy in a lot of situations when you are actually off road. I put 250k on the Chevy and never had any major problems. I never had it in a situation where I needed posi in reverse with my boat so I can't comment on that. I can tell you that the Ram version of a limited slip diff is a joke if mine is the way its supposed to work and if the dealer can't fix it or I am stuck with this thing because it's just the way it is it's coming out.

Has your our ram had an issue on your boat ramp or are you going off over this one experience where your friends laughed at you?

No as I said I haven't used my boat since I got the truck. It's been a crazy summer. And no I am not over reacting because my buddies had fun with me.I actually laughed with them but it was a little imbarrasing .

Personally, I would laugh at your gm buddies and not worry about a p.o.s. G80 differential letting loose and destroying the entire rear end. As a long time, multiple gm truck owner, ask me how I know

I've had plenty of g80 and you had to just tear the **** out of it.If you had that many problems. You do this rear end the same way, just wait and see what happens to it.

My 2WD 3:92 LS rear has no problem backing up my 3100# travel trailer up hill on my gravel drive. I figured I wouldn't need a 4WD with a 2WD posi, and I don't. Never a problem in snow and ice getting out of my drive. Quite happy with the RAM.

Quite the opposite actually. I use my vehicles as they were intended. Primarily towing and farm use.

The truck I'm referring to was a 98 Silverado 1/2 ton that was primarily my daily driver. The diff failed on it while decelerating from highway speed. Never found out exactly what failed, but the entire axle internals were replaced. I ended up going with a TruTrac locking diff and never had a problem with the axle again.

I replaced this truck with a new 2005 half ton, while the differential never exploded, the g80 was rebuilt under warranty, as well as the transmission (both under 20k miles). I traded this truck in shortly thereafter on a 2008 model and never had a problem with it.

Neither truck was abused nor ragged out. The were garage kept daily drivers. I use my 93 Silverado 2500 with 250k miles on it for all "real" farm use, and it just keeps on getting it

good video but :roflsquared: the truck with the Powertrax in it hit the rollers at like 15mph, while the others crawled on, then accelerated when they hit the rollers, if they had that momentum they would of made it too

It was more to show that when the traction differential is large a limited slip will slip. It's not a locker or a spool.

Right, I know. Im just saying the speed of that truck aiming for the rollers didn't work well for a sales pitch is all..

For those who don't know, the Dodge Anti-Spin LS is different then traditional LS carriers. Unlike normal LS which has constant pressure on the clutches to keep the axles turning at the same speed the Anti-spin is a non pre load design meaning the rear end will act like an open rear diff when it does not sense torque on the gears. This design makes it more fuel efficient when doing basic city or highway driving.

When differential torque is applied to the gears it applies an axial counterforce on the clutch system to get the torque bias equaled to the axles. So when the torque input is very low the force needed to counter the torque bias will be decreased so you get the results of an open differential.

If you were to spin the tires in the air under normal condition it will appear to be an open diff.

So when you try to burn out on 2 different surfaces of unequal tractions, its gonna spin like an open diff. The system is designed to be used with the traction control and ABS because if you drove lots of regular LSD trucks, you know that they can have a nasty habit of getting away on you on slick surfaces like ice or wet pavement.

In other words in only works as an LSD when its actually needed.
