Recently picked up a 18 ram with the 5.7. Looking into the potential of this motor with basic bolt on for now. Here are my plans.vararam Intake, catch can,and corsa catback. Here is where the fun starts and the questions begin. I drive a boat load of miles 30k plus a year so warranty will be gone when I pay it off in 3 years. If I stick with the 5.7 I plan to do longtubes, tune, tB, and any other recommendations. My other line of thought is to buy a 6.4 truck motor now as from what I understand 5.7 Intake and heads will fit on it. Bore and stroke it to a 426 slap on ported polished 5.7 heads, cam, Intake etc. I know this sounds dumb but I want to keep the 5.7 heads and Intake because of the vararam it just looks awesome. With the stock manifold flow enough for a 426 or am I dreaming. Not looking to go to insane 450rwhp. And I know I can boost a lot cheaper and make more power but I like na motors. I had zl1's turbo coyotes and 900hp terminator cobras. My favorite though was a 500hp ls3 ss 1le. Any input is much appreciated. I know the 426 has been done on older trucks just hope it can still be done on the 18. If not maybe a totaled hellcat motor is in order?hmmm. Again this won't happen over night this is a 3 year goal due to $.

Sounds like a plan. I think even with you spreading your plans out over 3 years you're still going to need pretty deep pockets unless you can do the majority of work yourself.

6.4 block (can stroke but not needed)
Truck manifold.
Street cam with supporting mods (springs lifters etc)
Long tubes.
Custom tune.
Your vararam.
Ported Eagle, Apache or Edlebrock heads.
TB of choice.

That should hit close to your goal

Hunt up Jay Greene on facebook. He's running a 426 based 6.4 truck block in his,and he can help you with your cam questions and tuning.Only HP has cracked the 2018's for tuning, you could hunt up Owen Chung on Nadodge on facebook,as far as I know,he's one of the few guys who's working on tuning his 2018 through HP,so he'd also be a good guy to talk to. Not many of the hardcore guys are left on here, they've all migrated to facebook lately.Tuned Rams or Nadodge is where you can find both of them.

30,000 miles a year? I wouldn't even bother modding. Leave it stock and run it into the ground... save your money and buy a project vehicle if you want something to go fast, and keep the miles off of it.

Thanks for all the input guys. 30k miles is a lot but I like my projects and i drive my projects and actually enjoy them. Nothing worse than a "trailer queen". Only time will tell but it should be fun.

My niece Taylor her truck is a 2014 RCSB 4x2,
We did the SRT392 MDS cam swap in June (2017) on her truck, after an average of 3 pulls HP/TQ = 315/340 stock, no tune, no aftermarket anything, installed the 392SRT Auto cam her truck pulled HP340@5500 TQ 375 @4400, after tuning was 355/380…STOCK EXHAUST and CAI all numbers are rear wheel
As of 3/1/18 her short block was rebuilt(.005 over 348 CI), with Manley pistons 597405C-8 (12.4 ish Compression) stock 2016 5.7 crank and K1 rods , the Stock Eagle heads were upgraded with 2.10 intake 1.625 Exhaust vale , port matched , light cleaning on the Intake side ,full polish on the exhaust side, Kooks headers and 2.25 duals out the back with Walker Dynomax(not the best we know) 392NON-MdS cam , last date with the dyno yielded 431 RWHP

There is a F-ton of potential with the 5.7 Eagle engine.

Is that keeping the vvt? Or locked out? Is there any advantages block for block comparing the pre-eagle to eagle? Or is it just the heads that are improving the power?

Ohio, what tranny no rear end gears do you have?

What is the nature of the 30,000 miles? Work? Hauling ? Towing? Commuting?

VVT is still active, which is the beauty of the oem MDS cams. they have that 20somthing retard built in .
I had to open up the intake valve notch on the pistons to deal with the added Dia of the valve and what little . Next cam that goes in there is 633/640 lift I'll delete the VVT phaser for that one.
the Eagle heads don't care which block they are the are on, one of the things that gets lost in comparing the Eagle vs the non eagle 5.7 is the cam , it's bigger in the eagle, and the VVt helps with the mid range Hp difference

Both block are good foundations for 90% types of 5.7 builds , but in a all out 5.7 based block build, the Pre eagle would win because of the cylinder walls are thicker they'll hold their shape better, plus cams are still cheeper at this time.

The 392-short block that was in my truck was a 2011 NON- MDS-SRT392 made 407HP, and 400TQ,...stock manifolds and exhaust. and as pulled from my 5.7 Eagle heads
The 428CI (4.09 Bore and 4.08 stroke) in my truck as of this writing is based on the 2011 SRT392 Block , the Eagle heads on this motor are still as pulled from my 5.7 , it made 452hp with the Non-Mds cam,
With Comp Cams # 201-424-17 my 428 is pulling 485 hp on the dyno ……..still has stock as delivered 2014 exhaust on the truck...….yes the Eco Boost guys lose a lot of money on this race.
Unless you get under my truck and see the BGE casted in the block....it looks %100 as delivered from FCA.

now for the sharp ones out there, her 346 is making roughly 1.26hp per CI, and my 428 is making roughly 1.13 Hp per CI., her supporting items are better than mine(Headers, Valves, 2 points higher compression) good example of the whole package will always make more HP per CI

Dyno numbers are only for the naïve,what do these trucks run in the 1/4 and at what DA. Case in point my buddy has a healthy bolt-on 6.4 Superbee that's got a dyno sheet showing 510 rwhp and 505 rwtq ,but my 435 rwhp and 455 rwtq truck that out weighes his Superbee by 600lbs outruns his Bee by 3/10's ,like I said dyno numbers are only for the naïve. A dyno is a tuning tool, nothing more/nothing less. So what do both of these trucks run at the track?

^ Agreed. HP is just one element in the equation. That is why I asked what rear end he has; yet to receive an answer. Tire size is important as well.

Take the 5.7, let it inhale, let it exhale. Good tune. Proper gears, and it's pretty darn fast for a big truck. If that's not enough put a roots blower on it. Not too much boost. Call it a day. There is just so much you can do with a big truck.

There will always be someone faster, who has more disposable income to throw at his project. But it's all in what is important to you.

Dyno #s are only given as example of what each direction will give him. a good combo 5.7 in these trucks is hard to beat with out spending lots of cash.

Not bad numbers, but nothing to write home about, lol. I run 12.21 at 4,000ft DA with 435rwhp in a 4X4 no less. Your new combo better put you in the mid 11's,or else I wouldn't be bragging to much about your horsepower and torque numbers, lol. Hate to say anything but you won't make the top 15 list on Nadodge,i'm one of 2 4X4's on the list and my 12.21 puts me at 14th spot, lol.
Gary's Hemi on here has run a best of 12.5 with basically a stock truck, cold air/afe midpipe and that's about it as far as mods on Gary's 2015 R/T. Kyle Tingle has run 11.98 with a bolt-on truck, with a cam and small convertor. 12.6's are decent numbers, but not really fast enough to be bragging about your dyno numbers
