Looking at 2500's, how many miles before you started having issues?
Yes, I realize this largely depends on how well the truck is maintained, and what it is used for, but I'm just looking for ball park numbers here, on high dollar repairs like wheel bearings, sudden trans failure, axle failure, and stuff like that.

All within the last 5K miles, my current 1500 has started needing all kinds of repairs. what started as a simple break pad change, turned into pads, rotors, calipers, and ball joints. And right now, I'm looking at possibly having to change out the entire front differential housing and steering rack. Up until now, my 1500 has been trouble free, and only required regular basic maintenance.

I have no NEED for the capability (towing/hauling) of a 2500, but over the last week or two of dealing with the front end of this 1500, I have developed a deep hatred of independent front suspensions.

So, in order to get a solid front axle, I have started looking at 2500's. Just about all of the 2500's that I could afford, have over 100K miles on them, and I was wandering if there is a certain mileage point, at which 2500's develop issues?

thanks for any insight you can provide.

Engine? That’s the big thing. My 2014 with the 5.7 has 115k. No issues. One front wheel bearing replaced $500 at dealer I had aftermarket warranty so cost $100. Or I woulda done it myself. Service the diffs, tranny and engine they’ll last. I got my truck with 72k on it. Generally hubs seem to last anywhere from 50-100k miles lol

22hemi13,
Is it safe to say that you wouldn’t avoid a 5.7 2500 with 100k miles, as long as it appears to have been maintained well?

Damn straight. Best part about the 5.7 in the 2500.....no mds! It does just fine as long as you’re not towing heavy or very often. It’ll do it. But she’s thirsty and won’t win a race. I changed all my fluids pretty quickly after I bought it. Front and rear gears looked good. Dealer did tranny service. I change my own oil. All about that maintenance

Ha I see where you said you don’t tow really. Yeah me either anymore. Love the solid front axle. I have put a truren kit on it and it’s amazing. I believe my ballpoints are starting to wear.....35” tires and lots of off-roading. These big ole front ends are heavy and will always have parts wear out.

85K on my 2014 2500 Hemi and no big problems. My tranny did blow @ 38K and was covered under warranty but that's definitely an odd occurrence. Hanging out on this board regularly since I got my truck 5 years ago and there are really no large scale repeated problems to speak of.

My old 06 Duramax 2500 ate front end parts like crazy - hubs, pitman arm, bushing/balljoints, etc., etc. That's honestly why I got rid of it at 150K miles. Every time I went in for an oil change is was $1000 worth of repairs. Of course, I'm only at 85K now so who knows what is to come but I'm overall pretty happy with my Ram (first one I've owned and I'm 90% sure I will buy another if/when the time comes).

I don't plan on finding out such things.
Gonna trade/sell for new truck in 3 years or 36k miles, which ever comes first. Lol. But from what I have heard and seen, these trucks are pretty dependable if properly maintained.
All my Dodge trucks were pretty good to me, mostly.

Once the 8 speed gets into full swing “ prolly over the next 3-9 months you are going to see a lot of 6 speed 2500”s on the market I assume. I believe they stoped the 5.7 in 17 or 18? .. the 6.4 does fine. Towing or not a 4:56 gear ratio really helps the 6.4 utilize mds so that it is effective in reducing fuel consumption.

What is your price point? 30-35k? How much are you looking to spend and where are you located at?

30-35k? I wish. More like 20k max, preferably less, but will be somewhat dependent on what I could get for my current truck.
That’s why I’m looking at used trucks with 100k miles on them. I’m located in a rural farming area in western Indiana. I’m sure being rural and mostly farming is part of the reason 2500’s seem to be higher priced around here.

Yeah 20k won't even get you a decent 1500 these days. Trucks hold their value too well these days.

Save your money and buy new. Deals can be had especially late in the year when quotas are trying to be met. Good luck

Just found one yesterday, that seemed promising.
2013 tradesman, Crew cab, diesel with 104k miles for just under $26k.
Don’t really know much about diesels, and wouldn’t ever use it to its potential.

However, I may hold off, and make repairs to the 1500 first. Doing so will help to get more $$ from the sale of the 1500.

Not to steer you away but you could find a tradesman 6.4 for not much more money around 30k brand new. I tried to justify a diesel when I bought mine but couldn't see dropping similar money for a truck that had 80 to 100k on it already. Good luck with your search.

I picked up a used 2500 with a 5.7. Just turned over 200,000 miles. Uses a bit of oil but pulls real good, drinks plenty of gas. Talked with the previous owner---blew out the standard 6 speed tranny at 180,000 miles, other than that he said he just changed U joints every once in a while. So far, no oil drips on the ground.

FYI wheel bearing are not high dollar.

Technically, no, they are not “high dollar”, but I still don’t like modern unit-bearings. I’d much rather have old school serviceable inner and outer bearings.

Last unit-bearing that I had to deal with, was on our Nissan Armada. It gave us all of about 5 miles of warning before it wasn’t drivable. Never had old style bearings fail that badly, that quickly.

I know this is the 4th gen section, but what do you guys think of the 3rd gen's? specifically a '07 1500 mega cab?
It is my understanding that the 1500 mega cabs are just 2500's with softer springs, is this correct?
I have found this one locally, with 140K miles. the big appeal is that I should be able to sell my current 1500 for enough to pay off the remainder of my loan, and then pay cash for this mega cab, and be loan free. this is really appealing as I may be changing careers in the near future, and having to at least for the short term, deal with a considerable pay cut.

guess I'm just looking for thoughts on the 3rd gen 1500 mega cabs.
thanks,
muddy

If it is on a 2500 front end I would check all the ball joints, hub bearings, tie rods etc. At that mileage they are likely going to need to be replaced. Also a 5.7 in a heavy mega cab is going to get very poor mpg so add that to your monthly budget.

Something else to consider, while it has some miles left in it it is getting up there for a gas truck. Another 2 -3 years of driving you will be pushing 200k and the value of that truck will drop like a rock.
