Hey everyone. I'm selling my current v6 f150 to upgrade to a v8, but I have a small budget (<4k) I'm thinking about this truck here, but I'm concerned with the miles. I know these trucks have a reputation to go with their transmissions, which is why I'm a little concerned. Does anybody have thoughts on this buy, whether the truck is reliable or not? I commute 50 miles a day so reliability is important. Here's a link and thanks for the help,

Ryan

The engines in these trucks are almost bulletproof. The 5.2 318 even more though. But the 5.9 360 is pretty damn good. I have pulled a 5000 pound trailer around 50 miles going 70. Im not saying it did it with ease put it handled it pretty well. Ive forgot to add oil just because I was so busy with other things a forgot and was driving around with it 4 quarts low! Nothing happened and I'm thankful for it lol Anyway, 190,000 miles on that truck is pretty decent imo. Especially since your in cali. There is not going to be any corrosion (that I'm aware of) and the 4wd should be in great shape if it wasn't used a lot. The transmissions on these trucks do have a bad reputation though. Mine has slipped once or twice but not recently. The body on that truck looks nice, the paint looks good, the tires it has on it are not cheap and look nice. If it were me id go for it. If you treat these trucks right and take care of them they will last a long time. Just gotta take the time to do maintenance when needed! lol Id pull the trigger! Good truck, cheap price, just look it over really good if you go to look at it! Good luck!

My only suggestions are to make sure the engine doesn't ping and make sure the transmission doesn't slip. Looks good otherwise.

How is the 5.2 more bulletproof than the 5.9?

Anyway. Major two problems are the plenum, which we have a thread for, and tranny. If it's still in good condition a quality shift kit will hold you off for a long time. Even better if you get a new torque converter. There's some other issues like the lsds grenading and snap ring failure in the tcase. Not too common but there's enough cases to make you want to do something about it. It's hard to say if it will be reliable or not because we can't see it. You might have crap luck and it needs stuff upfront, same goes for any truck. I see people recommending a comp test be done to check the motors condition often. Might check that out. As said before, these are reliable trucks and you should be happy with it.

See if he's got a receipt for the recent valve job so you can see who did the work. Maybe try and ask them about the truck. I'd also get a reputable mechanic to check it over for you. Maybe find a problem you can get fixed, but use as a bargaining chip on the price.

Thanks for the responses guys. The owner said the transmission was rebuilt, but didn't mention what year. I'm gonna go look at it Saturday, fingers crossed. I'm tired of driving a truck than sounds like an import

I'll look into the plenum, haven't heard of it before. Even though it's a California truck, is there any rust-prone spots on this model to keep an eye out for?

Again thanks guys

Typical rust spots would be the rockers and the bed over the rear wheels.
