Welcome to RF! :welcome:

3.21's will net you slightly better highway MPG's.

But honestly, just do yourself a favor and get 3.92's. More acceleration, help with towing, less wear/tear on your drive train, and you're truck wont feel like it's gutless.

What are you using your truck for? Occasional tow vehicle?

I tow a trailer twice a year. When I ordered mine, there was no information on the gear set in the A8 transmission. If I'd have known what I know now, I wouldn't have bought the 3.92. It's just not necessary unless you tow a LOT. The A8 with 3.92's give you roughly a 14 to 1 gear ration in 1st gear.

My last tank of 70% highway and 30% city yielded me a horrifying 13.2MPG and I consider myself an aggressive driver, but not in the sense that I'm mashing the go pedal at any opportunity.

Make sure the people offering advise are using the same transmission you're looking at.

As stated, mines the A8.

Im in the same boat except I have 3.55's. All of the people I know with rams have 6 speeds and out of the 3 2 of them get in the 20's on the expressway, one has 3.55's the other has 3.92's. The other person has 3.55's and gets the same as me for mileage. I think you have to get the right truck. I honestly think there imare just certain trucks that do not get good fuel mileage for one reason or another. If it were me I would get 3.92's and hope for the best. My last tank was 13.9 and this tank right now is showing 14.2, which means I am in the 12's for mileage. That is pitiful in my opinion. If I were towing or hauling I could see it but empty mostly expressway no way.

It's your truck...do what works for you.
I'm not sure how much we can "blame" lower gearing on crappy mileage.
Our mileage is terrible but I wouldn't trade my 3.92s for anything except 4.10s:love62:

I can flirt with 20 mpg on the highway with the stock setup and I have the 3.92...No regrets

I have 3.21s and while they aren't the best towing gear by far, they do a fine job of towing my race car trailer the 10 times a year I head to the track. They do a great job of giving me 17mpg around town and 21mpg on the highway on the 350 days a year I don't tow. I agree with what has been said that it is all up to what you are using your truck for as to what gearing will be easier to live with.

Coming from a guy who had a regular cab, 6.7L deleted Cummins:

I am very impressed with my 8 speed / 3.21 combo. It is extrememly fun to drive but also gets me the fuel economy my wallet is looking for.

Also, in case you were wondering, the shifter knob works well too!

The only thing I wish my truck had was a 32 gallon fuel tank.
