So I went to the local audio store to look at options for a new radio ad I have the plain jane 3.0 in my truck. The salesmen shows me this......60bf491e85eaf20cf911db7b6dbbe67e.jpg

Yup...but it's an awesome upgrade. It even decodes FLAC from a USB or SD card.

Doesn't do much for more wattage nor does it improve your speakers.

I looked at that one also but sadly couldn't afford it. It's big but it looked great installed on the truck I saw

These are pretty nice. Unfortunately at this time Alpine charges such a premium for them. In my mind there has to be quite a markup on them. Hardware wise there's nothing to justify the huge price jump. Maybe there is but up front i don't see it. They would sell a lot of these if they would get the price down to about 1500 or less. I'm sure in a few years that will be more the norm as Pioneer and even those clowns at Kenwood look to enter this area of the market.

They had some decent double din touch screen dvd head units I was looking at. As an example I found pioneer unit for $278(ballpark) by the time he got done telling me everything that would be needed for the install the price was up over $600 bucks. All I would really need is the install brackets, an antenna adapter and wiring harness right?

Yup, unless your were trying to add steering wheel controls or nav. Then 600 installed would make sense. Bring it over with a case of beer and it will be done in 20 minutes.

When I was looking to upgrade the stock stereo in my wife's SUV to something with built in Nav and Bluetooth I checked out the Name Brands but was turned off by the crazy prices. I ended up buying a Chinese knock off direct from China for $350 that had everything that the name brand ones had. I used it for about 5 years without a problem then sold the car. You may want to explore that as an option.

While I love the Alpine idea... it doesn't have CarPlay or Android Auto... which in todays market is an absolute dealer breaker IMO. The price is pretty absurd too, you can get a solid touchscreen that does everything the Alpine does, plus more for $500-600.

$600 for install? Hmm...
Maestro RR - $150
Maestro CH3 - $35
Antenna - $17
Dash Kit - $17
Radio Install - $100
SWC Install - $60
Pioneer Radio - $280

Going Maestro and full retail on everything you are at $660 before tax with that Pioneer radio if you have SWC. Highly doubt the $280 Pioneer does Maestro though (which I am sure most of recommend getting a radio capable of it) A more simple price breakdown:

Radio - $280
Dash Kit - $17
Install - $100
Metra Harness - $100
Antenna - $17

$514 before tax with no SWC. Either way $600 is well within the ballpark at retail value if you have SWC. May be able to get prices a little bit lower, but I would expect too much, maybe $50-100 at most depending on what options you choose.
