So my Ram 1500 has decent pressure at idle but loses it when I get on down the road. Its fine when I keep the RPMs up but otherwise it drops sharply. Any clue what this could be? Or suggestions where to look and how?

What weight oil are you running? How far does it drop? Oil pressure is always higher while cold because the oil is thicker. As the engine and oil warm up, the oil becomes thinner and moves around the engine easier, resulting in a lower oil pressure. If it's dropping dramatically there could be an issue, otherwise not so much. I run 5w 20 and I run 24 psi warm and 40 psi cold at idle

an engine only requires 10 psi for each 1000 RPM. so 20 psi at 2000 RPM, 30 psi at 3000 RPM, etc. but if you had a dramatic drop then i would look elsewhere.

You guys using 5-20w in 2nd gens? I thought manual called for either 5-30w or 10-30_?

could be the oil pump or the sump screen could be clogged, could be the oil pressure switch or something, mine was doing that a while back.

I will probably switch to 5w30 for the rest of the summer, I used it all winter because really high oil pressure scares me a little bit. I like using 5w20 it doesn't leak out as much as you'd think and, this is just opinion, I think it oils better.

Lets just put it this way. The switch to 5w20 in recent years is not to make the engine last longer. Most likely no harm has been done but if your truck specs 5w30 run it.
On a side note I run 5w30 in my mds hemi and she loves it.

It's running 10-30. It drops to about 5 psi per 1k rpm and that's why I'm concerned. I checked for sludge under the valve covers to see if the reuptake was being blocked. I'll check the screen by the pump tomorrow. Thanks to all you guys
