I started my 2012, 4.7, 4x4 Ram with 116,000 miles and put it in D. It showed 4th gear, not D and went from park to this gear very abruptly. When I gave it gas it was very weak feeling. I drove it about a mile and it kept acting in this manner, never showing any other gear but 4. The + and - would not change the gears. Putting it in reverse was also very abrupt. Going from P to R to N to D was very abrupt. I then scanned it and got 9 codes. Some were repeats. Here they are:

PO876
PO882
PO731
PO846
PO871
PO988
PO868
PO869

I then restarted it to check the fluid level which was on the lowest two holes and nice and pink. Then I ran the shifter through the gears and all acted normal. No more abrupt shifting. It would show D when it was in D and the + and - worked. Moving the truck forward and backward seemed normal. I looked up all the codes and they were all transmission codes relating mostly to fluid pressure.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,

Top off fluid, most of those look like fluid codes which is usually a VB/SP thing. You have the 6 speed? Which is 65rfe.

Yes it is the 65rfe 6 speed auto. I did see somewhere that the spin on filter in the trans can split, which may cause this problem. Anyone have experience with that?

We have had guys tighten filter to tight and have the plastic break and it was fatal for that transmission or causes a serious issue he needed to drop pan, I forget the outcome it was years ago. Here is a thread that gives you options, at a minimum get a metal thread upgrade. The ones with the hex are nice. Regardless if this is your issue, these are nice upgrades.
