Planning on doing ball joints next weekend and trying to figure out if I need to remove the lower control arm to swap the ball joint. I know the upper needs to be completely replaced, and and joints. But is the lower the same? I thought you can do just the ball joint with out needing to take the whole lower arm out?

You can just press the old ball joints out and press new ones in with the control arms still on the truck, but I have decided that it's worth spending the extra money to get the entire lower control arm to save a lot of time and aggravation as well as getting new bushings at the same time.

Rockauto usually has Mevotech lower control arms for under $100 each.

I can understand that approach, I already have the ball joints, and I don't have any kind of compression tool for the springs.

You'll have to compress the spring because of how it's done. Not so much for ease but safety

If you have a decent floor jack, you have something to compress the spring. Just put it securely under the spring pocket and use it to take the tension off.

I just used some general purpose grease (Valvoline brand I believe) from the parts store. I try to hit them with a couple shots of grease every time I change the oil if I remember.
