Just wondering if that is OK for a 2012 bighorn with the center console shifter-you just click the stick left or right-Love it ,just dont want to do any damage to the trans. Maybe I should keep waiting for the inevitable red light or stop sign to turn it off ?

I had a 2012 with the center console. Same as with 8 speed. My only caveat is take foot off of gas, though probably not needed...I take foot off of gas for MY 12,15, 19, all three.

Center console shifter-my favourite Ram shifter-only 6sp though--I always think I should be at a stop before I do this to turn off msd
I don't think I have ever tried to turn mine off

Why are people so hell bent on disabling it? I hardly notice it, and all it does is help my mpg a bit.

because there is some speculation that it may be part of the issues with lifters and cams dying early as its always the same cylinders that shut off when MDS engages. but i've seen nothing to prove its the case. some people also don't like the motorboat sound it can make.

Thanks for the response guys on the mds while in motion-as for the question a member asked why turn off mds--my reason is I would be fine with mds if it alternated which cylinders shut down so the pistons ,lifters, valves, plugs, etc would wear evenly instead of the same 4 cylinders always shuttin down. It should be set up like a slot machine so it is random. I dont know if its true but i heard on this forum that when its in 4cylinder mode that 2x gas is injected into the 4 cylinders-essentially not being more efficient at all. Is this right.DSC00570.JPG DSC00570.JPG

to your question about the fuel, all I can say is most of my driving is in city and i tested mds off for 3 weeks vs on knowing my driving would all be in city. 1.5 litres per 100 km more fuel used with mds off. works out to about 1.5 miles per gallon better with it on.

The 2x fuel being dumped in the "off" cylinders would cause O2 sensor issues and lead to catalytic converter failures. As for the lifter cam issue, it seems to be a failure in the roller bearings used on our roller lifters, particularly on older models. Supposedly in late 2016 or so they modified the lifters to provide better oiling to the roller bearings. When the roller bearings fail the roller on the lifter does not turn efficiently, as well as the side of the lifter make eventually make contact with the cam. The results are worn out lead edge on the lifter loob.

I also thought it would be crazy for 2x fuel in the 4cylinders -but there are plenty on this forum who have stated it as fact-mechanics even--I would like to get to the bottom of this-but if it was true then members would not be seeing any gains with MDS--on the otherhand many dont. Can a FAC engineer or pro mechanic clarify this once and forall?

I guess Im just old school. If i was trying to get great gas mileage I would have bought an ugly 4 cyl tacoma. I wanted a truck, trucks are supposed to have 8 cyls. MDS disable for me.

The fact is that i get 1.5 miles per gallon better around the city with mds enabled than disabled. So on that basis i'm not buying the 2x fuel claim.

so just because you cannot feel it everyone else should do the same? i could feel it when it came on in my 16 every.single time. that truck was 100% stock. my current 14 has a borla catback. i mistakenly forgot to turn it off ONE time and i thought there was something seriously wrong with it when mds kicked on. i absolutely hate how it drives going in and out of mds. and i do not want my truck to sound like its driving under water. nevermind activating and deactivating cylinders etc.

Bottom line if the MDS is on ECO will be lit (if enabled) but as mentioned ECO on doesn't guarantee MDS is on.
That said, I thought MDS was a 1500 thing and not on the 2500's???

That combination is a possibility. the prior poster made it sound like it's conclusive that MDS is the issue. New people come here all the time looking for answers...and correct info.

pretty safe to say MDS + 5w20 oil is a recipe for destruction
I have heard somewhere that the MDS wont work unless you use 5w20--does this mean that I can use a different oil weight and the mds wont come on again? That would be a great solution-but will I damage the engine-The 5w20 is damn thin and doesnt last long especially in hot climates,Its great for cold start-ups but doesnt cling aswell as a thicker oil. Does anyone know if the mds doesnt activate with a thicker oil or would this create issues?
