Now that I am out of Warranty. these engine failures we keep hearing about does worry me for the longevity of my Ram. Seams like an alarming amount of these Ram's fail between 70k and 100,000k miles, but that is just my opinion on that. What do you think is a reasonable amount of miles before you should be replacing internals and do you think you will get there if not already there? As somebody with Hemi tick whether I found a way to mask it or not, I am concerned with what I have read on this board and others about mainly Hemi engines. Is the problem overblown, or legitimate concerns?

Im not sure. On one hand I think hey, 100K miles is nothing to sneeze at, so what if it needs a cam? On the other hand I think of Honda/Nissan engines reportedly going 200K+ with nothing but routine maintenance.

If the Hemi werent so damn hard to replace the cam and lifters on, I wouldnt have any care in the world about doing it myself. But removing the heads to do it? What a PITA.

This is one of the reasons Im seriously considering Lifetime MaxCare, no matter what the cost. If I decide to actually keep my RAM, I will most likely buy the extended warranty.

Yeah, Im familiar with that overly long thread you are on :)

The vibration is what's souring me on the truck, not the possible tick in the future. I hate being told "its normal, see!" when its literally never happened to me on any vehicle ever before. If I do get rid of my RAM, it will be because of that.

Other than that, I do love my truck ;)

I am not worried about something that might happen. From what I have read I get the feeling it is a small percentage. Life is too short to worry about every little thing that can go wrong. If it does happen to me out of warranty I will make the call then to fix it or set it on fire.

Well in the grand sceem of things there are really only a few cam failures compared to how many are out there.
Well that is unless you are one of the unlucky people to have a cam/lifter fail.
It is the back of my mind and why I ponied up for Redline 5w30 and a Royal Purple filter.

Ram sells a lot of trucks, failures in any vehicle happen. I have a hemi Durango 05, lots of posts I see of engine failure, but my Durango has been going 140,000+ miles runs like new and gets good mileage for a old motor with old plugs still. My 13 5.7 I haven't put many miles on it, but other than a connector that gets wet in car wash and will blip check engine lights, no odd sounds and runs great.

I think you've been reading the complaints of a vocal minority.

I don't have exact figures at hand but given the number of Ram trucks produced vs. the small number of complaints I've seen here and on other forums, I don't think you have much to worry about unless you abuse it and don't service it properly.

I totally understand where you're coming from with the max care extended warranty, been bouncing that around in my head too. My only problem is do I wanna lay out the money now for something that might happen and if it does it will only be partially fixed, or just keep the money for now and if something happens pay to get it fixed right. Or just plan on getting rid of it when it gets close to power train warranty expireing. Just trying to figure out what the best option is.

Burla, there are many hemi engines with the famed hemi tick that have gone over 200000 miles.

For me, if I loose an engine, the decision will be between, rebuild as stock? Upgrade to 6.4 ? And Wich turbo or SC ?

If you take care of your Ram and service it regularly it will take care of you and last along time
If you abuse it or any vechial for that matter it will fail at some point.

So I'm just curious guys, since it's been brought up a couple times in this post, what do y'all consider abuse on these hemi trucks?? And I mean besides
the obvious like not keeping up on normal maintenance, dragging them thru mud, water, or routinely lighting up the tires and racing them.....

I think you pretty much covered it. Have fun and enjoy but take care of your truck!

Get the warranty. My door locks messed up last month and the only way to fix them was with a new body control module. I'm sure the price to replace that wasn't cheap. I had the warranty so I was just out 100.00

Try clicking on every page in the engine performance section, at least 2 hemi tick threads by different members on every page. It is a very significant issue.

I've had my very BEST luck with Mopar. My wife had transmissions go out on 2 Fords that were bought new and were never abused. When we went to pick up the 2nd one there were 6 Fords lined up side by side waiting for transmission work.

I know several people with Hemi's with well over 100,000 miles, and had never even HEARD of a hemi tick until I joined this Forum. The 4.7 I had in my last Ram was discontinued and gets ragged on in Forums but you can find MANY examples of that "dog" of an engine going 250,000 trouble free miles.

Mopar has sold many tens of thousands of the 5.7, actually it is no doubt in the hundreds of thousands and people always turn to Forums when they have an issue. So, I would say a few dozen problems, or even a few hundred, while not GOOD, would hardly be a reason to panic. You have to consider many people are not good about maintenance, and some people simply abuse the hell out of ****.

There are a LOT of performance threads in this Forum alone. People run the crap out of these engines.

These powerplants are AWESOME, and I love my Bighorn.

I don't know about max, care, but I found out the hard way that extended warranty, can be very limiting! You don't get a choice on quality of what part you replace. Not only a choice in parts, but also, the person doing the work.. ( if you live over a certain distance from dealer you can go to " any certified auto repair place".... Ya right.. if you talk to the repair places, some don't/ won't do warranty work. The insurance company will only pay their set price per hr/job, also won't pay the shop back until months later.. or won't pay at all for a part that the insurance company thought did not need replaced. They would not replace both struts, because only one, was blown! Even though there is credible evidence on handling and safety issues ( during hard braking ) if you don't do them both at same time.
