Metal pieces on brake pads ?

Does anyone know what the metal pieces that go on the ends of the brake pads are for ?
lets just say my pads fell out when i was doing my struts and i cant find the little metal pieces. are they necessary ?

They are anti rattle clips. They're not entirely necessary, but keep the pads from shifting & making noise on initial brake apply.
