I checked my oil the other day and seen a narrow silver flake about 1/8 - 3/16 long. I changed the oil and went to a 5w30 for a little more protection but can still see small metal specks on the dip stick. I dont have any ticking but could the cam and lifters be going out? The truck is a 2014 with the 5.7 and 86k miles

Mine went at like 60k. Your ultimate tell is to cut the oil filter apart. I mean if Ur pulling metal it's already bad but the question is how bad. Any engine codes or anything? My cam wasn't worn too bad but I had a lifter collapse and it pounded the cam Alittle. It made too much metal for my liking and for the untrained eye the cam and lifter would have been shrugged off. The ticking was unbearable tho.

Coulda been something from the casting/machining process that was floating around or finally came loose. Maybe drive it for a few days and as much of a pita it is to change the filter spin off ur old one cut it part and take a peek and spin a new one on.
Then if you don't see anything get an oil analysis, they can give you alot of information on bearing condition acidity the works. Many of the guys can help with deciphering that info as well.

Mine have shavings in oil too. At 73k still running great, no codes and no tick. Maybe I will send an oil sample to Blackstone to be sure nothing is going wrong.

Do you have a catch can? Is there metal shavings or sign of metal particles in it?

I agree, the oil analysis is a really good idea.

Yeah there's definately a few glints in there for sure. Too bad we couldn't have seen the old filter.
This was the old filter i pulled off a couple days ago. It had around 5k miles on it
