Just joined up so I could pick some brains. I did a cam and lifters on a 2014 5.7. Did my best to purchase quality parts but think I got counterfeit lifters from Ebay. Quick rundown of events. Got the truck with cylinder 3 misfire, only felt it in gear, at idle it was smooth and quiet. Tore apart and cylinder 3 intake lobe and lifter wiped out. Checked solenoid screen and clean, so decided to do cam and lifters. Bought Melling OEM grind cam, and supposed OEM lifters. Reassembled engine and all seemed good a bit noisy from top end, but hoped it just needed a little time. After reaching EOT in park, misfire 3 returned, but only now in park, in gear goes away, put in park and raise a idle a bit, goes away. This is opposite of original misfire fault. Compression is perfect. Valvetrain noisy. I certainly believe that the lifters are fake. I bought 1 set of OEM lifters from Rock Auto just to compare with the ones from Ebay and what I see is the ones from Rock have a laser etched number on the collar and no oil hole in the collar area like the Ebay and the roller pin looks like a different metal as the color is different. I would like to hear from other members on what OEM lifters should be like compared to fakes. Did the OEMS come in different styles or variations. What have your OEM lifters looked like? The top set in photo is Ebay and the bottom set is from Rock. Thanks thumbnail (1).jpg

100% fake

No OEM Hemi lifters have these oil holes.

There are only 2 "styles", of eom hemi lifter, mds and non-mds.

The lifter pictured is 100%, for sure, not a Mopar lifter. Neither mds nor non-mds. It does however look exactly like one of those Chinese lifters sold under names like Sealed power, DND, RookSame UbuyNow, etc.

The one from Rock Auto sounds like OEM. The lack of oil hole and the laser etching are correct.

This forums search has lots of good information that can help with your truck going forward.
It sucks having to repeat a job for any reason , but having some **** rip-off be the cause is even worse.
Hope you have better luck with the new parts .

EdGs just did a great write up on his cam and lifter change, you may find some pointers there.

Did you get the Melling cam from Ebay also?

I wouldn't even trust that, probably "Rook same, U buy" brand. 100% Chinesium.

Here's a front set of OE lifters. I dont have a pic of the rear set, but they are exactly opposite of these.

Your pic of the RockAuto lifters looks like a rear set, and looks good. You can see differences in the finish quality between the OE and Ebay ones.

You been had by the wonderous place called Ebay :Big Laugh: Never buy anything that's a b!atch to change from either Epay or Amazon. Trying to save a buck, bites when you have to do the job over again and spend the money to buy the good parts.
Just to give you a heads up,never buy sparkplugs from either site,as the majority of their name brand plugs are fake knock offs.

I know it was a chance I took and it bit me in the you know what. The cam was from Rock so I know that is real. Now the question is do I buy the rest of the lifters from Rock or cut my losses and get a complete engine, thats what I need to decide. As far as the doing the job over, to me, thats not a big deal, I am not doing it in the chassis, this is a fairly simple engine to remove. Do I want to risk still having a possible problem and throwing away another 1K. Thanks for your reply's.

How many miles on the engine?

Good that the cam came from Rock.

Rock is a good choice for OE lifters.

You should replace head bolts too.

Depending on miles have to consider and check wear on pushrods, rocker arms, valve stems, etc. Ask me how I know.......lol

Wish you the best for a smooth repair.

Fwiw @RGoody , I did this job on my truck last year with lots of guidance from this forum. They advocate hard for OEM parts, so that's what I used. Thankfully, it all worked well. I'm 10k miles down the road now and truck runs great. I can't really even tell any difference in mpg now that I deleted the mds. Best of luck with your truck.

No to Mopar, I bought a rebuilt from Promar, have purchased a Hemi and a Jeep 4.0 from them in the past. Very reputable and good quality, never had a problem with them and the prices are good. I recommend them to anybody.

I put in a set of Sealed Power lifters from Rock Auto. Sealed Power has been around for a lot of years and they are owned by Federal Mogul.
I'll know in the next few months because We are approaching "transplant" time.

Sorry to say but this motor is not getting painted, was laid up too long so being assembled and dropped in and kicked out the door. Not my truck but an employees truck over here. I will share some pics of the Ram Hemi I did for my friend back in 2022 and the Jeep 4.0 I did for my son. The Jeep motor was painted Caterpillar Yellow. Looked really cool and my son got a lot of remarks from oil change centers when he had it down in school. This was back in 2020, truck still driving up and down the east coast.
