Changed oil today on my 14 1500 Pentastar with 137xxx miles and for kicks decided to cut open oil filter to see what might be there. I’m a little surprised at all the sparkly metal flakes.

I’ve changed oil regularly at ~5000 miles since I bought the truck with 22k miles but did just replace rockers/ lifters on left bank in September and right bank the year before. Each side only had 1 rocker that was loose and the cams looked fine.

Should I be concerned?5109e1ab60e916f8da0ac18ce534aa64.jpeg

What did you use to cut the filter open? If you used a saw blade you probably got metal in the filter common error that happens. If not and the engine is quiet and runs fine I wouldnt be to concerned YET however if you have time to burn pull both valve covers inspect the cams for wear.

Did any of the particles have a part number on them? If not, don't worry. The only way to cut a filter is with a proper filter cutting tool.

Left side Cams looked perfect in September and right bank cams looked perfect the year before.

failing bearings, pistons, camshafts, or timing components will all produce this ... Having said that, I have seen much worse than that in running engines.

I would do a couple of oil changes closer together, maybe 2000 - 2500 miles apart. Look for sparkles, it could have been debris from a long time back that just got dislodged. That would be my starting point.
