Hi all, so I owned my truck roughly alittle over a year, it’s an 09 with 120k, I bought it with 100k, switched it to amsoil 5w20 oem, at about 7 months of owning it I started getting the P0308 code, I’d clear it and it wouldn’t come back for 500 to 1000 miles, and reading how many issues with the cams I’m kinda worried, I’ve cleared it about 4 total times, the first time I did coil packs and spark plugs, how serious should I be about getting it replaced or just keep going since it runs fine and just randomly goes off after a few months, thanks.

Are there any other codes that pop up at the same time? It could also be some bad gas at those times or a fuel injector that is dirty/clogged that cleans itself out. It could be an oxygen sensor that read something wrong as well. There are a lot of sensors and parts that could cause a misfire other than spark plugs and coils. Also pay attention to the weather when it happens. I’ve seen rain cause misfits granted that was usually on vehicles that had distributors and spark plug wires and I know we don’t have them. Just pay attention to what all is going on when you get that code. You can try running a tank of gas with a bottle of Seafoam in it with a better quality gas (higher octane rating) and see if it goes away without having to clear the code. Camshaft issues don’t generally fix themselves unless it’s the camshaft position sensor that had a little issue.

Randomly throwing a code every few months is better than most I’ve seen. Try looking into the fuel injector! I’d definitely dump that 20w oil and choose a stout 30w oil moving forward. At 120k miles with unknown maintenance history I’d go with a conventional High mileage oil. If you know it’s been well maintained throughout its life then a very stout good quality synthetic would be my choice.
Does it throw the misfire code under heavy throttle? If it does that would lean towards a lifter going bad. Once the roller on the lifter seizes up it will eat your cam.
