Hey guys my check engine oil like is set to come on every 3,000 miles I have always ran full synthetic in everything I own. Mobile 1 full synthetic advanced claimes it's good for 15,000 miles. Is that even safe to do run oil that long? Thoughts, experiences please

So went 6,000 on this advanced formula and just had my oil changed and the guy said there is sludge in my oil. He said I need to change it every 3,000 I feel like he's trying to screw me. Full Synthetic should be good for at least 6,000 shouldnt have sludge already.

You should be able to run a quality mineral oil for 6k.

In these engines, there is allot of technology and engineering that place a serious demand on the oil. The MDS system and the cam advance system both work off oil pressure that is regulated by the ECU.

Early on with the GM multi-displacment engine in their trucks, they were shipping the trucks with synthetic and telling the customers to use synthetic, but the majority of dealers told customers that mineral was fine. ( of course they do, they have barrel after barrel of cheap bulk oil and low grade filters to sell at top dollar)

That being said, internally these type of engines don't have the tolerance in them to handle ANY sludge. It plugs up the variable valve system, so they have an intrigate series of screens and filters internally to protect it.

My boss's truck shut itself off with zero oil pressure, but after sitting 5 minutes the oil would come up the dip stick. It was pumping the pan dry and filling the heads and intakes cause these screens were plugged, cause he was taking it to the dealer and they were doing the oil changes.

Of course they NOW suggested synthetic, and he suggested he wasn't going to pay to fix it ($1200 repair bill) since he was going with what they recommended, not what GM recommended.

Boil it all down, stick with the best oils and filters you can afford.

Me? It will be 5w20 Mobil 1

I am doing 10k with Bosch Distance filter and Amsoil 0w-20 XL. No sludge it still looks good and the filter is a key part of going long distance. Don't be scared good oil will last 10k. I would never use dyno anyway.

If you go back to the same place to change your oil, tell him it only has 3k on it and see what they say (but still go the 6k you did before).

Personally, I change about ever 4k with high quality oil/filter. I used to use Royal Purple, but switched to Mobil 1 full syn oil and filter.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I sent my oil off to BlackStone Oil Labs for an analysis.

I did 7500 on the last change, I'm going for 10k this next change on plain ol Mobil 1 5W20 Synthetic. They didn't seem to think I'd have any issues with this. I'll keep ya'll posted.

Google them, they'll send you a sampling container. You take a sample (midstream during the draining) and you mail it in with a check.

They offer 2 different tests, both where like $35 I think.
They send you a full breakout with a whole lot of useless information to a common person, and a clearly worded understandable narrative explaining what it all means.

a single oil analysis will give you limited information. constant oil analysis picks up the changes over time. for best results you should pick an oil and interval and stick to it.

IMO, a good synthetic oil in a modern, properly running engine should not have a problem lasting 10K-15K miles, I would however change the filter at a shorter interval or half way point.

Which formula are you using? Signature I would go 20k but I am scared to do more than 10k with just XL.

I would like to know how he could see sludge in your oil,
I have done a lot of oil changes, over the years, if that oil had sludge in it
it had to very black, unless it a diesel then it would be black but it still would have life lift in it And it looks like you have 2012 Ram, just no way full synthetic would be that dirty in 6000 miles.

I ran a FJ toyota for a short time and it came from the factory with 0-20 synthetic they have it setup every 10k for oil change. i still change at 5k

I just change my Ram @1300 miles and put 5/20 Amsoil synthetic in,
I run Mobile 1 V twin Synthetic in my Harley and it can get up 260 degrees or more, I change it at 2500 and it away look gold in color:)

I don't know if any of you have ever heard of it but schaffer synthetic oil is by far better than any other synthetic oil on the market. I have ran it in dirt track race cars and broken off oil pumps and still finished racing with no engine damage. I would bet my life on that oil. Check out the website schaffer.com

Yes I have heard of it but I don't feel it is better than Amsoil. I will say I have not seen Amsoil compared to Schaffer's. Show me some numbers so I can change my mind :)

Check out schaffer's website and look at the specs and compare. Schaffer is by far the best oil on the market. Amsoil is great oil as well as royal purple but not nearly as good as schaffer. Make sure to check out the diesel test that schaffer did on an 18 wheeler.
