You should be able to run a quality mineral oil for 6k.
In these engines, there is allot of technology and engineering that place a serious demand on the oil. The MDS system and the cam advance system both work off oil pressure that is regulated by the ECU.
Early on with the GM multi-displacment engine in their trucks, they were shipping the trucks with synthetic and telling the customers to use synthetic, but the majority of dealers told customers that mineral was fine. ( of course they do, they have barrel after barrel of cheap bulk oil and low grade filters to sell at top dollar)
That being said, internally these type of engines don't have the tolerance in them to handle ANY sludge. It plugs up the variable valve system, so they have an intrigate series of screens and filters internally to protect it.
My boss's truck shut itself off with zero oil pressure, but after sitting 5 minutes the oil would come up the dip stick. It was pumping the pan dry and filling the heads and intakes cause these screens were plugged, cause he was taking it to the dealer and they were doing the oil changes.
Of course they NOW suggested synthetic, and he suggested he wasn't going to pay to fix it ($1200 repair bill) since he was going with what they recommended, not what GM recommended.
Boil it all down, stick with the best oils and filters you can afford.
Me? It will be 5w20 Mobil 1
