So, I have a 4th gen ram 5.7 hemi. I am ashamed to admit this but a Ford powerstroke diesel took me straight off the line. In my opinion this shouldn't have happened. Atleast not on the take off. Any advice to "pep up " the hemi? I'm thinking the pedal commander is my first choice but .....

Diesel engines do produce more torque then a gas engine so it’s no surprise to me that the truck with the diesel won. What you can do about it depends on how much money want to spend. Get some long tube headers and a new y-pipe with some high flow cats. Install new cams and throttle body. A tuner with a custom tune. How far do you want to go? $$$$$

I know the voices in my head aren’t real, but man, do they ever come up with some great ideas.

I think there's a bit more to it than that :D like the 7.3L IDI turbodiesel in 90's F250's made at most 388 lb-ft, which is less than the 410lb-ft a 2017 1500 Hemi makes. Kohler will sell you a diesel 13.4 cubic inch engine making 7.2 ft-lbs of torque.

It's like when people say electric motors make more torque than internal combustion... that's weird because I can totally stop an electric ceiling fan with my hand but if that fan was hooked up to an idling Hemi it'd take my hand off (and not only because of the rpm).

A Pedal Commander will help that. Also try turning off traction control, I've read that it tends to slow response so you don't break traction in the first place. Not sure if our Rams di but some cars definitely do.

What is your gear ratio? Do you have huge tires? Do you have a 5/6 speed trans or an 8 speed? Hemi's usually respond well to a custom tune, long tube headers and a good performance CIA, such as a Vararam. This would be a good start. You need to realize that some of the diesels running around have huge hp and torque and you're going to have to spend lots and lots of money to compete with them. If this was just a one-time occurrence I'd take it in stride and do a few mod's and be done with it. If you want a race truck--get your credit card out---LOL

Did you punch it and spun? I know I can’t just stand on mine off the line and go anywhere it wil just spin all the way into 2nd and then stop spinning then downshift back down into 1st- it’s pretty violent with my anti slip rear end popping and sometimes some wheel hop too

This. If you're just looking for "more pep" or quickness off the line, there is no better bang for the buck than the pedal Commander. $300, five minutes to install, and can adjust from your phone. When you start getting into headers, custom tunes, custom exhaust, etc., you're looking at thousands of dollars and hours of install time. Just depends on what you're wanting exactly.

If your getting wheel hop you need to get some Core 4x4 lower control arms. If you don't, plan on a set of spider gears--at the least.

Even without being tuned any of the big 3 HD diesels make more torque just above idle than either of the Hemis (5.7 & 6.4) do maxed out. Any of them will pull out of the hole provided they can keep the wheels planted. Torque is what gets you moving, it's only until get the Hemi wound up/over 4K rpms will the engine gain the advantage.
I watched tuned F-350 with a fully loaded in bed salt spreader and V-Boss snowplow outrun a Camaro onto the freeway. If I had to take a guess at the weight of that F-350, it was easily 13K lbs

Its straight stock. I wasnt aware that diesels had that much torque and take off. I held my own for a few seconds but it sounded to me that he had a chip or something in the motor.

Pedal commander is great for improving throttle response to make it feel snapper off the line but keep in mind it doesn’t make more power or make the truck any faster. Gets rid of that delay though.

It depends on your budget. An intake, some long tubes and a tube would really wake it up though.

You can also go the route of gears as well, they can really make a difference.

What powerstroke was it? The 6.0 can be built to run fast. Same as the 6.4. those things can be monsters with just a little investment. Reliability on the other hand can be a toss up. So it's hard to say. If you have 321 rear that says a lot. Esp stock.

Tough to offer any help on power not knowing your budget. Anything can be made fast with enough money. My truck has a catback, Cai, 35s and 4" lift with dang 321 gears. An fn Sentra will probably smoke me off the line. My truck is not fast to say the least

Do you have 3.21s? I would roast a diesel off the line that was stock!

Buy a sports car if you have the need for speed. I used to have a 5 speed 5.0 Mustang as a fun toy. Had years of fun with it until someone rammed into back of it while was parked on my street, totaling it. That was back in 2009 and finally in 2018 i couldn't take not having a toy so picked up a 1991 Corvette. Very fun to drive and although that year only had 245 hp with stock motor it has kick your ass low end torque.

From a standing start it will beat my RAM and even at a roiling start it would be hard to beat. Plus, it so much fun to drive and of course corners so much better. (And 4th generation Vettes are cheap)

One of the new mid engine vettes would be fun to drive.
