I don't think anyone buys a truck for mileage, but there is nothing wrong with trying to get the best you can out of it while still enjoying what you drive.

Like said above, you may gain about 1 mpg with an intake, exhaust, and throttle body. The tuner is where you will see an actual increase. I picked up 2mpg with my Hemifever tune on 93 octane. More power and mileage is a win/win for me.

For the record you have either 3.92's, 3.55's, or 3.21's. The only way to get 3.73's is to get a 2500.
I added the vararam intake, you can really feel the power but it didn't gain me any mileage. Other than that my truck is stock and I am averaging about 12.5 this winter mostly highway driving. If I were going to add something it would be a tuner.

So -- to be more productive, your right foot will affect your gas mileage more than any bolt on mod. Mods cost money, driving habits are free. Accelerate lightly and anticipate stops, coast into them. Keep speed as constant as you can.

I am dead serious. I get almost the same MPG in my RAM as my wife does in her v6 Journey driving like Mario Andretti.

And FFS, turn MDS back on. It is not the devil and it's trying to help you accomplish your goal.

What I don't understand, is the sticker for the 2014 1500 is saying 16MPG for city, but everyone on here is saying 12-13.

Does everyone have that big of MODS that it would hinder the MPG that bad?

What I have come to realize is the stickers on these trucks mean nothing. Take the rating and subtract 2 or 3 mpg's and that is what you will get.

Synthetic oils in all places. Easy on the gas, drop in filter from AEM or other dryflow will maybe get you 1 mpg tops. Using non ethanol fuel if possible is a big one that will gain you 10-20% as ethanol is garbage. Nitrogen in tires at correct pressure very slight advantage. Not letting it idle if possible due to conditions and where you store it. Running in 4 cyl mode as much as possible without 4wd. That is about all I can think of not much else you can do and all those might add up to 1 or 2 max and that is with no scientific proof just band calculated figures. Hell even where you buy the gas could alter results a little bit.

turning the truck off at lights helps, its kinda a cost benefit though. My truck has the start/stop technology and does it automatically, I do question if the wear on parts justifies the gas savings but I trust the engineers know what they are doing. Its also extremely common for people to do in Japan *shrug*. I try to do it only when I'm gonna be at the light for a little while.

I just bought my 2011 1500. 5.7 I haven't seen mph over 14 on the interstate. Everyone I talk to gets 19+. Any ideas? Considering chipping it and getting. K&N airfilter. Seems like something is wrong though, should be doing better than this

Better mpg with clutch fan removal

Thanks for all of the replies. Sarcasm by Whitebuck is nonproductive and unwarranted since I didnt buy the truck for mpg or I would have bought a prius. I love my truck and am wanting to get all I can out of it. Is that so wrong? I have a 5.7 Hemi with 33" tires. Im not trying to get 30 mpg out of it. Im asking what others have done that may help a little since I am going to do the mods anyways. With that being said, my thought process is that I can do all of these mods to increase power and performance, which in turn would increase mpg simply because it is producing more power than is needed for any given application.

There's nothing wrong having a bad ass fire breathing ram truck & trying to get better mpg's! Just imagine in the future if u could say I got a 500hp ram tht gets 30mpg? What's wrong with tht? IMO technology like tht impresses me. For those tht say dnt get a truck, why not have a truck tht can do both or try to accomplish both? We are getting there. Technology can be good, Eco diesel, turbos...

Besides all the good tips mentioned before me
1. Install efan mod or do what I did & get DS trinity tuner, keep Oem ac-fan but change temp settings with tuner to come on sooner. In either case by doing this u have to remove clutch fan which is at the end of motor sapping power. When I removed clutch fan I was surprised how heavy it was guessing @ 10#.
2. Switch to group 5 synthetic oil (not all synthetic oils are same, most are group 3 synthetic oil.) for motor, tranny, rear axle. Before I switched to redline, I used mobil1 0w/20 in winter time & definitely noticed mpg gain. Im thinking about switching from redline 5w/20 to redline0w/20.
3. Get a tonneau cover. This will help most if u do a lot of highway miles but guarentee mpg increase.
4. Remove spare tire for local driving. A lot of new cars don't come with spare tires to save weight.
5. Always keep mds on.
Hope this helps

I would say the chances are much greater that the people getting 19+ have a broken calculator.

I have an 09 5.7 and see 14 on street (I can get higher, but my foot has an auto-slam built in) and can easily get 15-16 with a mix highway/street if I want to be careful, which isn't often. Trips from Houston to San Antonio, about 200mi, and see around 18 at 70 (not cruise control). Of course, cross-winds are a major factor.

Things to consider
1) driving habits
2) weather - warm up time idling
3) gas - winter blend
4) rear gears
5) MDS on or off

I have k&n air filter, no noticeable improvement.

I,ve never been able to get my average down to the 13's and I've got 3.92's, factory 33's, run 87-E10, hammer the throttle on every on-ramp.... Still my overall average has only gotten down to 14.9. I think disabling the MDS made the biggest change to your highway MPG.
If I'm towing, it's a different story.

I'm jealous, my last fill up I got 12.9 hand calculated and I baby it (but I have 3.21, 90% city driving under 30 mph)

How you drive these trucks makes a big difference in MPG. Also as mentioned above, gas blends make a big difference. Ive had tanks around 12 and tanks above 20. If I'm tooling around town listening to magnaflow, it'll be around 12. If I'm driving on a flat highway at 65 coaxing MDS on as much as possible in the summer with summer blend gas, it'll be easily 19+.
