Hello all,

D-day for my 8HP70 fluid change.

2015 Ram 1500 SLT QC 5.7L 2wd, 108K on the odo.
Had the truck since Sept. '17, had 28.6K miles.
Have no hitch, very little hauling by me. I try not to drive it like I stole it, but I have my moments, and it is a HEMI.

Jacked up the truck, had to get the back wheels up about 9 - 10 inches to be level. Drained fluid and removed the pan, got about 4-1/2 qts. out.

As you can see, it was definately overdue.

Old vs new fluid:

Bought 7 qts. Mopar fluid and Mopar pan.

Check out who made the pan:

Hercules must have put the fill plug on, because it was tight.

As I said, got about 4-1/2 qts. out.

Magnets had some shizzle on them:

Notice Filtran, but made in USA

Installed the new pan, and added the first bit of fluid.

Took slightly over 3 qts. til fluid ran out of fill hole.

Started her up, and she took 2 more qts.

Followed the instruction sheet previously posted by Wild one. Just as I finished, my temp hit 122, so, I shut down for the night. Will redo the level check tomorrow. Then take her for a spin to get up to full temp. Then let her cool, and recheck the level.

I will add more posts tomorrow after the filter dissection.

Special thanks to Wild one for the posted instructions, Funkychateau, MRFREEZE57, and all others who contributed their experience to my endeavour.

I will most likely drain and fill after a bit to add some more fresh fluid to the system.

Filter dissection results:

Top side:

Bottom side: some flecks and a couple slivers of bronze.

Bottom of filter housing: Some of this could be small plastic crumbles from me digging out the filter media.

Overall, very happy with results so far.

Waiting on wife to help with level check, then off for a full temp ride, cooldown, and recheck. Stay tuned......

Rock Auto for pan and fluid, was $168 for pan, $21/qt. for the 8+9 speed atf.

Btw, dealer quoted $259 for the pan, and $29/qt. for fluid. Dealer said capacity was 8.7 qts, I bought 7. Took 5 on this go-round. Will most likely pick up a couple more qts. and drain and fill a couple k down the road.

Shipping was about $20 because of having to ship from 2 warehouses, but I came out WAY ahead.

If only I could pay myself for the labor.....

I thank my local stealership for NOT calling me back (twice), giving me the resolve to DIY, and all on this site for the experience and encouragement.

Just went through the fluid check procedure again. Trans temp was 110 when finished.

Took another 1/4 qt.

5-1/4 qts. so far, so I was down possibly 3/4 qt.

Stay tuned......

Finally got it cooled down enough to run through the level check again. This time, I had some extra dribble out, probably 4 - 5 ounces. It was right at 122 and still dribbling a bit, so I'm going to call it good for now.

I will definately want to do another drain and fill after a few k miles as the fluid was a very light greenish brown from the mix of new fluid with old.

I'm sure the influx of fresh fluid helped because it felt smoother to me when I ran to full temp before the last level check.

Did you remove your Y pipe for access to the fill port? I cut a 5/16th Allen wrench to squeeze in between the Y pipe and the fill port, then put a wrench on the cut Allen wrench. Seemed like the faster route, now my burnt up thumbs are not happy....not very easy getting that fill plug back in with hot exhaust pipes.

Soak the hell out of a couple rags you're not overly attached to,and throw them over the exhaust pipe when you're doing the final check.

I used an 8mm L key and a short bar for leverage.

I had a piece of nomex felt that I put over the exhaust to keep from burning myself.

Worked really well until 30 seconds before I was done. Removed the felt, and proceeded to touch the pipe with the back of my hand.

Only took about 1/10 of a second, and the slightest touch. Of course, as I was removing the felt...lol

Battle scars.....wasn't the first, and I'm sure not the last.

Did you have any problem capturing the old fluid with the drain directly over the exhaust?

Didn't use the drain plug, just let it drain as I loosened the bolts around the pan/filter....it surprised me how much you have to lift the rear of the truck to get the transmission level. I would say the tires were off the lift 18" or so.

I used a 10mm L key with the short side cut down to loosen the drain plug. Had about a 3 inch section of the exhaust that got wet with transmission fluid.

Just cleaned it up with some shop towels sprayed with brake cleaner when it was done draining and the new pan was in place.

My rear tires had to be off the ground about 9 or 10 inches for the transmission pan rail to be level.
