So, this summer I have kept myself quite busy and given my truck lots of attention. I have an 06 1500 quad cab 5.7 with a put 162,000 miles on it.

I ended up replacing basically the entire front end, except for lower control arms. I replaced upper controls arms, struts, inner and outer tie rods, upper and Lower ball joints, both cv axles, both the Intermediate and stub axles(pretty sure thats what they are called)and both axle seals of course. I replaced the rear shocks as well. I ended up replacing my tail lights with leds ones and my headlights with the halo led projectors. My biggest project and the one I'm most proud of was the body work that I did. Now I'm just going to throw this out there. I'm no where near a professional and I know it doesnt look like greatest so I dont need any comments like "that's a redneck way of doing things" or the "that's just wasting your time, it wont last" crap. I know this already but it looks way better than it did. This is not a how to guide, just going to explain a little bit on how I did it.

So, just like every truck, my rear wheel wells rusted out and looked like crap. I love my truck but absolutely hated the way it looked because I'd the rust. So this winter I put it in my head to do something about it this summer, so that's what I did. I bought a set of replacement upper wheel arches from amazon for 100 bucks I think. I dont have a welder so I had to come up with a plan to attach the new panels after I cut out the old. I ended up buying a pneumatic panel flanging tool, some panel adhesive and a rivet gun. Once I attached the new panels, bondo'd and sanded it down I used rattle cans to repaint the entire bed(I figured its better to paint the whole thing instead of trying to make the repaired area blend with the rest of the bed..again, im not a professional) and then clear-coated it and buffed it out. Like I said, it's not the greatest but I'm happy with it.

So, after i got done with both sides, i moved onto the nasty rust spot on my tailgate. Because it was at the bottom of the tailgate, it made my tailgate pretty flimsy there so I decided on using aluminum coil stock. I measured, cut and bent the piece I needed and then flanged, riveted and glue it into place like the wheel well panels. Heres a couple of pictures including before, during and after, also the headlights and taillights I got. Thanks for reading and looking

EDIT* sorry about the order of some of the pics, I couldnt figure out how to fix it

Like Christmas morning!

Long time ago, Richard Pryor said...
"You need to listen to old people. You don't get to be old bein' no fool! Lotta young, wise men deader'n a MuthaFu*ka.

A few thoughts from an old wrench....

1. Never beat yourself up or appologize in advance for your results of trying a tough thing for the first time. That's what friends are for. Trust me, they will not disappoint.

2. Now you and I BOTH know why good body men can charge what they do. I no longer consider body work "working on a car/truck". It is closer to sculpting artwork. I'm a fairly good mechanic but a terrible artist. Ask me how I know.

3. Nice Job. You made that 'ole Darge look like a different truck!

I think ya did a hell of a good job. I like it and you accomplished the mission with not a lot of cash invested. Your blending of tha paint is badass.
Your ingenuity really shows that you truly are a good mechanic with some skills you can add to your toolbox of life.
I believe you did some awesome ass work.
Always be proud of your accomplishments. [emoji1303][emoji1303][emoji1303][emoji1303]

That it awesome! How were you able to get the shape of the fender? Was it sculpting and a good eye? Your work is impressive.

Thanks fellas. It honestly wouldnt hurt my feelings if I didnt have to do anymore body work for the rest of my life lol. I did forget to mention that instead of buying the inner wheel wells and replacing those, I ended up cutting them out. I made sure I cut past the original rust on the outside and ground down any rust in the back (inside) of the original sheet metal. I then sprayed the inside of the wells and the backside of the replacement and original panels with rust converter, then primer, paint and then clearcoat to help prevent it from rusting.

I also used the aluminum on my drivers side rear rocker panel as it was rotted out too. I'm curious to see how well the aluminum will hold up over time. I forgot to post pictures of the headlights so heres a few. I wired the halos and leds to a wire behind the heater control panel (then to a switch so I can have the option to turn them off) so they come on as soon as the key is turned as opposed to wiring them to parking lights. Thanks again for your positive comments.20180902_190415.jpg 20180902_190527.jpg 20180902_190458.jpg 20180902_190533.jpg

Thank you. And the replacement panels came like that. I ordered them off of amazon for a pretty decent price I thought.

A few more things I forgot about. I bought 4 new falken wildpeak at3w all terrain tires which I love. 20180617_154519.jpg I also installed a double din android (Chinese version) head unit too. Like I said, spent way too much but I love my ram even more now. I've always wanted a ram but was never in a place to go out seeking one. I always bought what I could afford lol. Only thing that would complete it would be maybe a 4 in suspension lift.

You should be proud of your work, that was some pretty bad rust you fixed and kept your truck on the road....
At the end of the day, if it doesn't last forever it's only a bed and you can always replace the whole thing when finances are better....

Not one ounce of rust anywhere..... even on the manifold.. haha

Looks great man. I'm looking at replacing my taillights and headlights myself. I'm wondering if you could post the links to the lights and radio you bought like you did the sheet metal.
