Guys, I'm looking at a 2006 Ram 2500 MegaCab 4x4 w/ Hemi. My main reason for the purchase is I need something to tow my 2009 Jeep Wrangler 4dr Rubicon. She's sitting on 40's now and weighs in at approximately 6,000 pounds. After I put it on a trailer, I'll be looking at around 8,000-8,500 pounds I'll be pulling down the road.

My questions:

  • Am I asking too much of this truck? It has 4.10 gears and a Hemi.
  • If it's enough truck, should I use a weight distributing hitch with it?

Thanks in advance for any input.

A wd with built in sway control is a must!

Air bags may be necessary.

It may struggle on the hills, but the truck itself can take the weight for sure. Wt distr is for sure IMO. You may need some add ons to the motor too and she'll be hard on gas. My trailer weighs 6950 dry and so far so good on ability to tow (1500 with HD springs same count as a 2500 but 1/2 " less wide spring and load leveling shocks). I am glad i have some power adders for sure and can mostly keep it going at 65 mph on level ground.

Thanks for the input, guys. I'm not sure how this got into the 2009-Present category. I was sure I put it in the right spot. If a mod needs to move it, go for it. Sheesh, my first post and I mess it up. :(

FWIW, the truck does have airbags on it, too. I'm not too knowledgeable on air bags, though. What am I looking for to see if they're quality bags? How do you normally fill them up?

The best ones if you have harsh winters are the ones with a fill nozzle on the bumper that you attach an air hose too (or carry a portable tank or 12v plug in compressor). The fancier kits have built in compressor of their own that do it automatic. basically after you are hooked up you add air (avg is 30 PSI) and level out the truck and away you go. After you unhook you let air out to remove the new found rake.

To answer your question about quality just look to see if the install looks clean and if you buy the truck do an add air to see if the truck raises and then lowers good (bring an air guage to see what the pressure is at and check the glove box for literature on the system installed) up here air bags run 340 to 600 plus install..

Thank you for your input.

So, what I'm getting from this (and a couple other threads I've read) is that the truck will pull what I need it to pull (~8500lbs). I'm guessing that mileage is gonna be in the 8-12 range while towing and about 13-15 unloaded. I've got a 2006 Hemi Commander now that gets about 13-15 around home so it should be about there or maybe a hair lower.

I'll start looking at weight distribution hitches and trailers. Any brands/models I should steer clear of or look into in the WD hitch arena?

Thanks, all...
