Shorties yield a little bit of a power increase but the added bonus is they just bolt up to ur stock y-pipe, no fab required. Look into JBA for these.

If you have the funds, LTs are the way to go. Being in Cali, the set up I would recommend for you would be to look into Stainless Works or ARH for their LTH and un-catted Y-pipe set up then have an exhaust shop weld in your stock cats and some o2 bungs. That will give you factory emmisions as far as testing is concerned but still all the added power of LTs.

I did this exact set up on my last truck and when funds allow, will probably do it again to this one.

If you plan on doing any mods make sure they have a CARB # on them.

Technically, the only headers that are legal in Cali are the JBA shorties. They are the only ones that have a CARB certification sticker. Longtubes are always going to make more power though.

To stay legal, your only option is the JBA shorties. If you have someone that will pass your smog, then longtubes are always going to give you more power. Shorties are good for 10-12hp and longtubes are putting down 25-30hp. Its double the gain by running longtubes, but you run the risk of not passing smog.

I would go with ARH so that you at least have some form of cats on the truck. Hemifever will be able to rune out the rear o2 sensors for you, so you will not get any check engine light from the headers. It will be louder than stock, but still fairly quiet if you keep the stock muffler.

I'm in Cali and also got the JBA's. Can't compare them to long tubes but I did feel a difference. There also a lot cheaper than long tubes. Where in Cali are you?

I was hoping anyone had any further insight to LT headers in California. Whether or not they are CARB certified, can they pass smog inspections and what would that setup look like?

I called a local exhaust shop and was told high-flow cats are a joke, and one can't modify a CARB compliant accessory and still be covered under its exemption.

I'm looking at ARH 1-3/4" longtubes, but I want them to keep me legal. I'm not worried and the CEL, but rather the emissions.

Let me help your mind with this. It is illegal in all states to run long tube headers on modern vehicles that did not come stock. It is a violation of Federal law that prohibits the relocation and/or alteration of the stock Cats location. The mere fact that one needs a harness extention for the rear O2 sensor makes it clear. Unfortunitly, Cali is one of a handful of states that have the money and resources to enforce that law, for NOW. Have you never seen Johnny on the spot police with a vehicle pulled to the side of the road doing an inspection??? Even if you went through the trouble of getting those headers to pass an emissions test, Yes it's possible with work, YOU will not pass the Visual!!!

You have 2 options JBA shorties or SRT8. If you upgrade with a 80mm turbo on those shorties, you will push 750-800hp. All the power you will need and legal!!! Hope this clears the air for you.

I see what you did there...

For as much as we talk about LT headers, I always assumed they were okay to use, inspection or not. Thanks for the info. It's definitely something to look into if one were considering that route.
