There is no external portion of the lamp that will just plug n play, and I also don't have anything remotely resembling the side of the only external connection visible ... am I missing anything??

So you're going from quad halogen to Projector then? If you get the adapter harness they should be plug and play. Unfortunately the OEM and TYC projectors still utilize halogen bulbs. These projectors do great with an HID conversion on the low beam. So well in fact that I never find myself using high beams and so far have left the halogen in the high beam. Since you're waiting on parts, you may want to consider doing and HID upgrade at the same time.

I ordered some lumen led for them, and did confirm they fit. I've heard of HID melting the housing, and such so wanted to avoid that at all costs.

You'll get much better results with HID in a projector. Been running them in my TYC projectors for 4 or 5 years now without any issues. Give the LED a shot but I wouldn't expect too much from them. The way the LED are positioned on the light doesn't lend itself to projector lights performance.

How much hacking of wires did you have to do? I'm trying to avoid that at all costs.

None. The HID ballast sits right under my headlight. I had to drill a hole through the rear cap to run the wires which connect right to the low beam bulb. I used resistors which also I was able to tuck into the headlight, but if you have Alfa OBD you can run without the resistors and enable HID in your BCM.

So I got my adapters today. Works like a charm, although there is a third plug that is round and no clue what it connects to.

Any suggestions for HID kits? The LED unfortunately do not fit, so it turns out.

This isn't always true. If it's a projector designed for halogen bulbs, a led bulb will usually work better than a hid, if the projector is a true hid projector, there's no comparison..hid will dominate. It ask depends on the shape of the bowl, and the quality of the glass lense

May be a plug for an additional daytime running light? I am running morimoto 55watt. Problem free for 5 years but I did just replace my bulbs as expected after 5 years.

The extra round plug is probably for a resistor if your application requires it.

Where did you get your harness from? I got mine from retroshop, and it looks exactly like the one from retrofitsource and from headlightrevolution. See attached pic. There is a plug for the OEM headlight plug and a plug for the OEM parking light plug.

EDIT: I see above you said you got the harness from headlight revolution. That's where I got this picture, and now I can see an extra pigtail. I dont know if there was some kind of update, but mine do not have that. On the retroshop website, it shows an extra pigtail for a "12v connection". It also shows it as V3.0. I got mine from them a couple of years ago and there is no extra pigtail, and I have no issues with my 2017 as is.
