Hi -- I have a friend who is good with engines but admittedly bad with the internet, I'm good with the internet but bad with engines, so I'm helping him find a used engine for his
96 Dodge RAM 1500. He only needs the block as he's going to pull everything else off of his old engine. I've started searching https://autopartsearch.com/ but all that is special orders. The big thing we need to know is what year engines will work in this truck so that we can get the newest engine with the least mileage. Does anybody have advice on where to look beyond the start I have?

Thanks in advance,

Troy

Look into a short block or long block remanufactured engine, check prices along available warranty. Your friend will probably be further ahead going with a remanufactured than what you'll find out of a salvage yard.
You can check www.car-part.com for local salvage yards for a used engine.

The Dodge Ram Over the Years: Four Generations of Success
  • Cool Facts.
  • First Generation, 1981 – 1993.
  • Second Generation, 1994 – 2001.
  • Third Generation, 2002 – 2008.
  • Fourth Generation, 2009 – Present.
Which engine are you looking for ?
3.9L V6 Magnum engine?

I found this, you will have to double check the information:

any 3.9 Magnum will work from 1992 to 2003, but 1996 and later 3.9's use OBD-II, so you will have to swap sensors from the later years but is not that hard to do since you are swapping engines.
