Ok so I got a short block 5.7 to put back in my dodge ram. Got the heads worked and replaced all valve seats. So I cranked it up and it smoked like a freight train. Determined it.was water in exhaust and eventually cleared up. It has a tapping noise. Could possibly be a lifter or something. But I don't know what it is. Should I have primed something? What should I do?

How long did you run it? Did you pull the ASD relay and let it crank a few times to pump up the lifters or did you soak them in oil while they were out bore initial start up? What oil are you using? Sounds like a fresh build so you need to run oil with an additive. Did you assemble the motor or did it come assembled? If a pushrod was off it would run like a pro dragster. Any CEL's?

What is the asd relay? And yeah I got the bottom end and assembled the rest. Haven't ran it too long. What additive do I need to use and what is a cel?

So I went and rented something to push oil. I pushed 5 quarts of oil through the oil sending unit and then cranked it up and its still tapping

Welcome to Hemi's, lol. Check Engine Lights, also could means run the codes.

Break in oils have a lot of zinc that helps smooth the sharp edges. Don't use synthetic until after a short run with a break in oil.

What should I use for break in oil? I used just regular 5 20. Next time I crank it I'll take a vid. But my oil pressure sensor says I have no oil pressure. But when its off it'll pump oil through the hole like crazy. I'm crazy stumped and cant figure this one out. I thiught it might have been the "Hemi tap" but I'm not thinking so anymore

Regular Conventional oil is just fine, if you want it to break in faster use a break in additive, IMO not necessary.

Could my oil pressure switch not working make the oil not flow?

Generally your sending unit not working would force your computer to shut down your engine, so I doubt it. However, your truck is a lot older so maybe. That would show up in a code for sure though.

Did you run codes yet?

I would put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on the engine to check for oil pressure.

I was wondering if you replaced the oil pump. Could it be the pressure relief valve?

You better hope oil is getting everywhere and the sensor is just not working. A engine running without oil will last about 30 seconds before it starts eating the bearings.

Yeah... I hope so. The thing that stumps me is when I have the oil pressure sensor out it'll pump oil out of that hole pretty good. Could there be like a blockage or something?

Is this a used short block or a fresh rebuild? Typically a fresh rebuild will have a new oil pump installed with the other new parts. You said oil comes out of the sensor hole so I am thinking you have oil pressure but the sensor is dead. A mechanical guage will give that answer. Once you determine if there is oil pressure you can identify the tapping noise. With the valve covers off, rotate the engine by hand and observe each valve cycle up and down as it should. It is easy to have a push rod out of place when you installed the heads. good luck.
