Good morning guys, I am in the market for a powerwagon. My dealer has a real good deal on a 18 right now but I am struggling with holding out for a 2019 with the 8 speed transmission and getting exactly what i want ..

Any input

How good of a deal is the 18? What options does it have?

It has everything but the ram box that I can tell. 54K is what they are asking

Any input between the 6 speed trans and 8 speed trans?

I personally like the 6-speed trans. I've driven a 1/2T with the 8 speed and, unless you are in manual mode or tow/haul mode, it seemed as if it was always looking for the right gear and pretty slow on kicking down at lower speeds.

With the 3.92 diff gear owners have reported it performed better.

So if you wait for the 8 speed unit, make sure you get a taller (numerically) differential gear set.

Power Wagons will continue to come with 4.10s after the design refresh.

Hold out!!! Get the rambox, you know you will always wonder if you don't get what you want. I purchased mine 17' with the rambox, not wanting it.. Now, how did I ever get along without it. 2019s also have the better headlights and all kinds of creature comforts that I wish mine had.. Also, don't worry about the gears unless a big change is happening, PW have 4.10 nothing else. New winch setup is also sweet. Its your hard earned money, best spent how you want, not how others think.. Don't give in and settle for less than what you want.

Personally I'd wait til the redesign is released, that will lower the price of the "old" look. I bought mine new in 2017, Nov and paid 48k out the door, granted the 2018 was already out and close to end of the year and I didnt want the red color....still couldn't justify the 8k more for a paint change. My options were a base model any color I want or a red one fully loaded....easy choice for me

If you intend to tow or seriously off-road/rock crawl the truck, I would hold out for the 8 speed for the higher crawl ratio.

If it will primarily be a street truck with some light duty off-roading every now and then, I’d look for a 2018 or newer used PW with the options you want. I think the new release will be driving down prices on the <2018 trucks much like is happening with JK and JL Jeep prices.

In my opinion its the exact opposite of this. I have a ‘16 power wagon (6 speed obviously) and a ‘17 half ton (8 speed). The half ton is always in the perfect gear, upshifts and downshifts smooth and very well, and just floats along effortlessly. And even with the smaller hemi it feels very peppy. The power wagon trans has screwy gearing, dosnt downshift/upshift very well, and always feels like a big **** that cant hardly get out of its own way. The trans gearing/tuning is almost a joke IMO.

OP, I personally would hold out at this point for the 8 speed and of course the ramboxes. Those are the best thing since sliced bread.... I would be pist if I didnt have them anymore.

The 2018 is a nice truck not sure how big a difference the 8 speed trans will make but if your in a hurry I'd go with 2018. When the 2019 finally gets here you may have trouble finding one and won't get a deal on it. When the 2018 came out it took me 3 months to find a dealer in my area that even had one.

I bought the '18 to avoid the '19. I'm not a fan of the new style, don't want a dial shifter, don't need an 8 speed tran, but I wouldn't mind it. I would never purchase a vehicle in the first year of it's production anyway...I don't like being free "quality control". All the new stuff is going to bring new issues, issues that they will not have the ability to fix right away. I'd give it a year or so or just buy the '18, you won't regret it one bit. I also chose not to get the Ram Box, it's nice, but it has it's draw backs too! There are other options for cargo space if you need it!
If you like the "latest and greatest" then wait for it. I'm hoping that the dial shifter for one goes away quickly....if it works, great, but I want to see folks actually use it and see if it holds up with strong off road use (I don't think it will). For on the highway...sure...no issue, but in the mud? No way.
Good luck with the decision!

How would the dial shifter not hold up under off-road situations lol. I feel the column shifter is just as able to break going back and forth fast also. Seems like a non issue for off-roading. Just a new potsion to learn to shift

Well, been in a number of situations where I'm either stuck, or almost stuck and rocking the vehicle, I tend to be VERY hard on a column shifter throwing it from drive to reverse and back again....somehow throwing that little dial back and forth doesn't seem like it would hold up to abuse. Plus, a lot of time, I'm not looking at the dash when I am reaching around and shifting back and forth, either looking behind or beside at folks that might be near assisting....seems like it would be a further reach back AND what if I grab the radio dial instead?? Basically, I don't know....haven't tried it, I HAVE driven a RAM with the dial shifter, but only on the road...no issues with it there....maybe it will work just fine...but I have seen ZERO actual use of this in rough conditions over time....maybe in a year or two and some real use experience(by folks willing to risk spending $60k on something that I do not feel has been well thought out) would convince me otherwise...but I certainly do not want to be the one to take it into the woods and try it!
What are the plusses to a dial over the column shifter in an off-road situation? Can't think of a single one that said it SHOULD be done...to me...it's a gimmick...lets see how it fairs over the next year or two and then maybe.

Please remind me to never be one of the "folks that might be near assisting" if you "grab the radio instead". Thanks.

Shift knob has held up in the 1500s pretty well. I dont see an issue, I would buy for the 8 speed personally. Not a ton of differences to be proven...the transmission...lights...cosmetic stuff really....I have had tons of problems with my 17 and it's a "proven" design. Just had 2 recalls completed and need 2 more done....

Mazer, I'm a bit older than you. Besides the only way of not getting older is to die young.

Driven nearly all sticks for the majority of my life from 1970 to present. From a 1953 Ford F100 V8 pickup with a 3 on the tree to my eldest daughter's 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD and 2018 Jeep Rubicon both with 6 on the floor. Even raced dirt motorcycles. Learned to drive at 13 off road with a 1962 IHC Scout. Never had an issue with any synchronized manual transmission.

Can't even picture in my mind what the fuss is with in either selecting a D or a R with an automatic.
