Normally, you'd be correct, but, I've never used an automatic off-road, until now...it isn't horrible, but the PW is definitely different than my Jeeps! If they had offered a manual, I would have gotten it. I've been pleasantly surprised honestly. Here in the south, we have mostly mud, no rocks that I've found yet...haven't gone far enough west with it yet I guess!
Like you, I've seen a LOT of improvements over the years, but seen a lot of duds too.....I'll wait...got a 2018 PW with a lifetime warranty, so I'm in no hurry! the 8spd tranny is definitely a plus though....but there are a few things with this knob shift that bothers me...it assumes you are always looking at the knob when you shift it....when NOT looking forward I can tell if my truck is in Reverse or Drive by the position of the shifter...have to take my eyes off of what I'm doing with the knob. As I've said, I'll see what the reviews look like from the folks that get into the dirt with their trucks on a regular basis.

I have had the knob last three half ton trucks....I can shift it with out looking easy. I can go to any gear by pressing the shift button for each gear on the steering wheel! I can put in R with out looking or D with out looking using the knob ...... its very nice over the floor shifter of which i had as well. I can shift all 8 gears one at a times from steering wheel once the knob is in drive on the dash......My french fries and pop corn sets well in the center area where the shifters used to be so I can eat drink and drive too.

I'd take the 8 speed over the six any day, now. Had a '16 with the 6 speed and got a '17 Sport with the 8 speed, much prefer the 8 speed. Good luck.

For sure. The 6 speed is no where near as nice as the 8 speed and that column shifter I do not miss at all!

Like I said, on the street...probably just fine...take it off road and....I'll wait for the verdict. I have seen ZERO comments on how well it works. I just don't see it. I see getting stuck and trying to get the thing out of park if the battery dies.....or how well it will perform rocking it in and out of mud...when I see it works as well or better than a column...then I'd consider it. But for now...no way in hell.

I like the column shift myself but there is easily accessible manual park override under the dash that i know of.

Well....I’m illiterate. Can’t spell, read or write. It’s amazing I can even function on this forum at all or at life in general. I’m also on a forum to help with my spelling but somebody always gets mad when I ask for help spelling on a spelling forum. Kinda like a certain somebody getting feels over somebody asking for advice on a ram forum about a certain “vehicle”.
