Mazer, I'm a bit older than you. Besides the only way of not getting older is to die young.
Driven nearly all sticks for the majority of my life from 1970 to present. From a 1953 Ford F100 V8 pickup with a 3 on the tree to my eldest daughter's 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD and 2018 Jeep Rubicon both with 6 on the floor. Even raced dirt motorcycles. Learned to drive at 13 off road with a 1962 IHC Scout. Never had an issue with any synchronized manual transmission.
Can't even picture in my mind what the fuss is with in either selecting a D or a R with an automatic.
Normally, you'd be correct, but, I've never used an automatic off-road, until now...it isn't horrible, but the PW is definitely different than my Jeeps! If they had offered a manual, I would have gotten it. I've been pleasantly surprised honestly. Here in the south, we have mostly mud, no rocks that I've found yet...haven't gone far enough west with it yet I guess!
Like you, I've seen a LOT of improvements over the years, but seen a lot of duds too.....I'll wait...got a 2018 PW with a lifetime warranty, so I'm in no hurry! the 8spd tranny is definitely a plus though....but there are a few things with this knob shift that bothers me...it assumes you are always looking at the knob when you shift it....when NOT looking forward I can tell if my truck is in Reverse or Drive by the position of the shifter...have to take my eyes off of what I'm doing with the knob. As I've said, I'll see what the reviews look like from the folks that get into the dirt with their trucks on a regular basis.
