Hello everyone, new guy from Streamwood IL. In the market for a used Ram, will be my daily driver. I commute 80-100 miles a day and sometimes farther. Mopar guy to the heart, have had a couple of Jeep SRT's, Chargers, 300, Neon and others. So I'm looking at this 14 Ram Laramie in the link below. I have no intentions of paying asking price and I'm pretty good at negotiating my car purchases. So what should I be looking for as far as known issues or anything else you guys can think of. Also assuming it's in really good condition in person, what kind of price should I realistically expect to shoot for? Thanks in advance

This isn't exactly an answer to what you are asking, but if you're going to spend in that range, you might look at a used Eco diesel. I'm suggesting this because of your daily driving habits-- 29 MPG would appeal to me if I were driving that much on a daily basis.

:welcome: Welcome to the forum!! :D Glad to have ya!!

I kinda have to agree about the Eco Diesel. Unless actual fuel mileage isn't important to you...

Take it for a good drive. Check the alignment, all the bells and whistles, the 4 wheel drive, all the power functions... I mean everything! Leave nothing to question.

Thanks for the responses, not really interested in diesel as I like to do a lot of my own work and fluid changes. Wouldn't know where to start on a diesel. From what I have read and please correct me if I'm wrong. I should get about 21mpg hwy with the 5.7, correct?

Your mpg expectations on that 5.7 RAM with the 8 speed are reasonable as reported by others (I have the v6/8 spd crew cab SLT 4x4)

It is extremely well loaded along with the 8.4AN Nav (per the Vin) vs dealer activated non-Nav 8.4A radio. (There is a Siri Handsfree sw update v16.13.13 avatar for it).

That is a lot of money for any used truck, even with 10k miles. Not sure how that compares to a new one with slightly lightly less features.
It is very possible to get a new one with an msrp of around $45k for around $10k off with rebates/sales and shopping for a motivated dealer.
This is a good weekend for it too.

First off, be sure it's not a 3:92 rearend. Secondly, take it for a long drive on your route to work. It should log 21-22 mpg on cruise at 72-73 mph if it's like my 14 sport. That will tell you if it's performing well. Set the EVIC mileage display to zero and see what the mileage is for your trip. Depending on the city/highway ratio it should be somewhere in the 18/19 mpg range.

I won't argue that the EVIC is an approximation but my 14 Sport Hemi averaged 20.6 all the way to Florida from Michigan with 20.3 calculated. Usually just rolling at 72/73 on cruise on I-75.

You will then have a way to figure the costs of driving everyday at the miles you indicated. Fuel quality will also enter into the equation. Winter blend and high ETOH not as good as unblended gas.

Don't kid yourself, you are rolling more than 2 1/2 tons of vehicle down the road with 400 HP on tap so expecting it to be a Prius ain't happening.

Do your diligence so you are not a disappointed owner. They are great highway drivers.

As far as cost, kinda high but see what you can do if you are happy with driving/mileage experience. A motivated buyer is usually worth working with at the dealership.

Thanks and what's the issue with the 3:92 rear end, and how would I figure out without seeing a build sheet?

Std rearend is 3:21 and will deliver higher highway mileage than the optional 3:92. A lot of discussion on the forum about who likes what but for your use I would think the 3:21 will deliver better hwy mileage. My 14 Sport has the 3:21.

It should show on the build sheet. Just be careful as you read it. Most times it will say 3:21 as std equip but look under optional equipment to see if it lists the 3:92. If not, you should be good to go. If you can't find the build sheet try this by adding the vin at the end of the link

While searching for a truck I found this interesting.

enter this URL: http://www.chrysler.com/hostd/window...kerPdf.do?vin=

after the = enter a vin number and you can view the sticker and installed options...

All my other advice stands about determining if it's a truck for you. If it has the 3:92 and you are in lust, drive it and see what it does.

As an aside, I bought my 14 Ram used from a local Chevy dealer just like you are looking at doing. They handed me the digital keys and 1/2 a tank of fuel. I drove close to 90 miles on all kinds of roads including a long flat stretch of I-75 to look at mileage on cruise. Even called them after an hour to let them know I wasn't stealing it. No problem, take your time. I also downloaded the build sheet so I knew exactly what I had.

Worked out the deal contingent on my wife liking the truck when we came back later in the day for a demo ride with her.

All went well, best truck I've owned, but this is why I like to drive my vehicles before I buy them, Fewer surprises. Also get a copy of Carfax from the dealer also. My dealer includes them on their website with the truck add.

Just make an informed decision and don't look back.

Welcome!!! Glad to have you here. I agree with the idea of getting a truck with the 3.21's. I think you will be much happier with the mileage.

What kind of work do you plan on doing on the truck? Changing the oil shouldn't be any different on a gas engine than a diesel, the diesel will just hold a little more. If you're talking in terms of things breaking, that shouldn't be an issue. The Eco diesel is a proven engine that has shown to give reliable performance while sipping fuel. Plus, it has more torque than a Hemi. And it gets 29 MPG.

Don't get me wrong, the truck you're looking at is nice, but you'd be paying close to the price of a new one.
