Just a question for anybody who may be in the "know". Will I get a better deal on a truck that has been sitting on the lot for a few weeks or months, or do you do better price wise when you get something fresh to the dealers lot?

I though I read something about dealers getting better kick backs the faster they turn their inventory.

I'm looking at a $47k sport and I've already got them down to $40k just on emails alone. said they can do better if I am serious and come down and talk numbers and my trade in. The truck is gloss black..... but with the new brilliant black coming out, I think I may want that color instead.

Why did Chrysler have to change their black color options mid year !!!! :flipthebird:

Usually the longer it sits the more they are willing to deal. They want last years model's off the lot. They may get a incentive for selling current year vehicles, but no dealer wants anything sitting on their lot for any amount of time. You are going to get your best deals when a new body design comes out.

Dealers pay what they call a floor plan. Basically the vehicles on the lot are financed and the longer they have it the more interest they pay on it. So they want to get rid of the oldest inventory first so they pay less.

Is it a '14 or '15? If '14, start at $10k off sticker.

This closely confirms my observation with the truck I bought. The build date on the window sticker was about 10 months before I bought it. I got the truck for $13k off list.

It's a 2015. I'm not pulling the trigger unless the price is $10k off sticker. I know my trade in is worth about $22,500, so if they want to bump the trade in up and do less off the sticker, doesn't matter to me. I know what I want to pay so, we shall see

I'm also intrigued by this new brilliant black that the Rams will be coming in. Looks like the gloss black is discontinued.

Decisions , decisions......

time on the lot = better deal, absolutely.

For used inventory, pay close attention to the price. Ever wondered why they do .. say $22,994 ? $31,991 ?

The last number tells the sales person how long the car has been on the lot.

if it's a 0 = 0-15 days
if it's a 1 = 15-30 days
if it's a 2 = 30-45 days
3 = 45-60
4 .. etc.

Usually by the time they hit 5 they're on their way to the auction. If you're ever buying used this is one way to get an awesome price. 4's they will just about give them to you for their cost. .. just to free the lot space.

If this is true, it's a hell of a thing to keep in mind!! :favorites13:

Yessir .. a smiley face sticker on the back window = bonus for the salesman too.

Just watch the used lots with the 'True Price' hang tags on the rear view mirror. I have 5 uncles, every one of them are car salesmen. I also have personal experience with sales and while it may not be true on every lot on the planet, in most cases it is common to see it.

that's interesting...never heard that. Wonder if that is a common practice among most dealers.

Too many variables, but typically on the lot longer is best. Heard Chevy advertising incentives on silverados "in stock the longest" lately?

Depends heavily on the options though. If it's an unpopular trim level, because of a limited market (usually the bottom and top trim levels) you can still get them to move on a truck that's new to the lot.

Volume dealers will move on the price just to get the unit too, its just Inventory allocation for the next year + Hold Back and on to the next car. Some will work the profit off your trade instead of course.. But I agree, a small dealer on a low traffic road in the middle of nowhere deals more in price per unit vs. units per year.

Chrysler sees " Jim Bob's Chrysler Jeep Ram " has sold 100 Ram trucks in 2014. They will allocate 100 trucks to the lot next year too.. As compared to 600 trucks sold in 2014 and looking for more so I'm giving him 650 this year

I usually dont even deal with the local lots, just ride to Atlanta, Dallas, wherever your nearest big city volume lots are and you'll always find a better deal. New / Used, current or previous model year in my experience it will pay off to deal with large volume lots.

Ordered my Mega Cab and am waiting for it to arrive so no lot waiting, however, just bought my wife a 2015 Tahoe LTZ. Had a pretty good deal on one until I saw the invoice and it was shipped to the dealer last June. I opted to pay a tad more for one that arrived that week. Partly because they added a couple of features to the 2015's built after Oct 2014 and also because the longer it sits on the lot, the more it has been test driven, washed by some yahoo spraying it and wiping it with the same rag he used on the previous 50 cars, and also all the people who have sat in it....wear and tear already taking effect.

great info guys, thanks........ Heres my situation

1) Any way to tell how long a truck has been sitting on the lot ( check the sticker or build date somewhere? )

2) I'm from Long Island NY and we are a pretty populated area and we have a bunch of dodge dealers withing 30-45 minute drive.......any way to see who the large volum guys are?

3) THIS IS THE BIG ONE..........my local dealer has a gloss black sport that i want, but i am leaning towards the new Brilliant Black Pearcoat that Chrysler is coming out with...........

I was hoping to go into the dealer and get the gloss black one for the price i want ( $10k off sticker or more........i've already got them at $8k off.... ) but at the last minute i want to switch it and order the same truck but in Brilliant Black Pearl........

Thoughts?

For your color, get what you want and don't settle. It will drive you nuts if you don't. When I got my sport in 2012 I skipped on the sport hood because I couldn't find one in the price I wanted to be at. For 2 years I wished I had the hood every time I saw one on the road, and then finally traded in early to get one with the hood. So just get the color you want, or you'll end up wishing you had it or finally trading to get it.

I agree ^^ Get what you want, that's what's most important.

But, I do paint work too .. and I can tell you the Gloss Black would be MUCH easier to touch up nicks and scratches if you had to. Metallics and Pearls are a bit more challenging. Say you had to respray the tailgate. Things such as air pressure in the gun, ambient temp, humidity in the air / booth, etc. will all contribute to how the metallics lay out and you're more likely to see it. The panel will reflect light slightly different.

There's nothing like a slick black truck in my opinion., but man they are a pain to keep that way.

Just something else to consider. I think I'd chase the one on the lot if I were you, you'll get a better deal on it.

To check the build date on the truck would be one of the only ways I'd know to see how long the truck has been around. Lets say it was built the second week of Jan 2014, vs. August 2014. That (to me) would say they have had this truck for a while. It's likely it has been on the lot before the one with the later build date.

Walk by the truck and just take a picture of the window sticker where you see the VIN. (or write it down, I just use my cell phone) Stop by the parts dept and they can pull the build sheet on it. The build sheet will tell you the build date.

Oh, one more thing. If you finance the truck (even if it's a little bit) run it through Chrysler Capital. They will give you an additional $2k rebate allowance BUT the rate is 3.9%

Dont fret .. CC only requires you to pay 4 months payments, then you can either pay it off or refinance it at a better rate. (It's simple interest, so no penalties or interest piled on top of the amount financed) Regardless, it's $2k in your pocket. .. well, maybe $1850 :D

Even if you have the cash to buy it, just finance a little of it to get that extra coin.

thanks for the tips, i appreciate all of it.

I planned on telling them that i will finance through them if it gets me more off the sticker, and then go to my local credit union and get the rate down to somehting like 1.75% a few months later.

As for the color.......i'm so up in the air. I think i'm leaning towards the gloss black again. I had a nissan pathfinder ( brand new ) back in my 20's and i thought that car ( in gloss black ) looked sooooooo good when it was clean...... why did Chrysler have to discontinue the gloss black and replace it mid year !!! ?????
:flipthebird: chrysler !!!

I looked at some pics online last night and man, the gloss black is really nice......really really nice..... I'll have to see the Brilliant Black in person and make my decision.....

Make sure that the credit union will still give the new car financing... I got caught on that once. They considered the car used after a period of time. At least know the spread between new vs. used car financing.

I was told to check the state insp. sticker and that would help tell how long it has been on the lot. But I had a local Chevy dealer tell me they changed the sticker every Nov. and May. so hard to tell there... Of course my truck arrived in June and I bought it in Sept. I caved on it but got 6k off...
