Had my Ram for a week now and am debating if I need to get an extended warranty or not.

With the amount of electronics on vehicle these days and the dwindling things OE warranties are covering I am wondering if an extended warranty wouldn't make sense.

The Dealer wants almost $2400 for Max Care and $1500 for Added Care (less) out to 60 Mo/100k with a $100 deductible. I can also get a Comprehensive (like Max Care) coverage from USAA for $1100 for 72 Mo./75k and $0 deductible.

I traded a '10 Jeep Grand in because of cost of repairs w/o warranty. At 4 y.o. I had to replace the HID control module in that thing (not covered under warranty) and it was $900! Don't want to run into stuff like that on the Ram 37 Mos. down the road.

Any other options worth looking into?

TIA

I am in the "Yes" camp on this one. I didn't find any other full coverage options at the time I purchased my '06 SRT, the '07 MegaCab nor the current Ram so went with the MaxCare warranty.

You might check with the MaxCare folks directly. I noted that their price was lower than the dealer price at the time I was quoted.

I don't get extended warranties on my trucks. I don't keep than 4 years either. On my last Ram (2011) I maybe spent $500 on work after the 60,000 km warranty was up. Kept it for another year after warranty and put on 35,000 more kms.

That's the way I am leaning, I want to keep this Truck a while (5+ years at least) and work about all the expensive, non-drivetrain, stuff that could go bad.

I used to go thru a new Ram or Jeep about every 24-30 months, that is getting a bit expensive to keep flipping vehicles so I am hoping to keep this one longer (5+ or more).

The ones I purchased on the SRT & '07 MegaCab both paid off. I had to replace the REC/NAV head units in each vehicle. I paid less than $2K for each warranty and the head units retailed for $2200 each! I paid my $100 deductible each time and the one in the SRT is still goin' strong. Not the most up to date or highly optioned head unit, even for it's day but it works good.

Not sure what has happened to the REC/NAV in the MegaCab. It may still be in service for all I know. What I do know is that it survived this:

I got the lifetime Maxcare $100 deductible for $2300 from a dealer in Michigan. You must keep the vehicle a long time and not want to do a bunch of mods to make it pay off. You have 3yr/36mo (I think) to buy an extended factory with no penalty. There are some benefits to buying the extended before the factory too.

mine is a 7 year bumper to bumper, I plan on keeping this toy otherwise it would not fit my purchasing framework ie 14 Sport gone after 18 months and 18,000 miles.

I have this same warranty and paid the same price. I plan on keeping my truck a long time. It's paid off and has 20k miles on it. Mod list is short for me, just a muffler swap and drop in air filter for engine mods (if you'd even call them that).

My personal experience has been if something big is going to break, it happens soon and within the factory warranty. The odds are stacked against you of ever recouping the money you spend on extra warranties. Warranty companies have done the math and will not lose money.
Set the $ aside and if you need it to fix something that by chance isn't covered by the factory warranty, you got it. Over years of buying vehicles, some may be duds, most will be just fine. In the long run, not buying extended warranties will leave you many thousands of dollars ahead.
Just my personal experience.

It's really just a matter of how long you plan to keep it and how much the peace of mind is worth to you. Some of us (me included) only plan on keeping them 3-4 years.. so we either have full warranty or at the very least powertrain for the time we own it.. yes its a gamble on some electronics.. but I'll take the gamble on one year.

Now if you're one of those "drive it into the ground" folks and can see yourself with it for 10 years.. yes it will likely pay off for you, especially if youre only paying $2k for the warranty... and then theres just the piece of mind... you're paying $2k over the legth of your loan to know that IF your 8" touch screen claps out.. it doesn't come out of ur pocket. That may neverhappen.. but at least u know if it did, you aren't on the hook for the god knwos how much those cost.

This is kind of where I am, my past 5 or 6 vehicles never lasted more than 2 years in my driveway before I got bored with them and got something else (but they were all a few years old when I bought them). I'd like to think I might keep this one for 5 or more years as it is my first actual New vehicle.

With my recent rides, there seems to be a growing number of electronic/sensor issues that prop up on these newer vehicles, all things that you really can't fix in the driveway which is where I think the extended warranty would come in.
