Anybody else gotten the new recall for the 2018 ram halftons? Just got the notice on Car Fax.

Manufacturer Safety recall issued
NHTSA #19V-347
#V44 2015-2018 D TRUCK TAILGATE LATCH EXP

Thought this only applies to the older trucks.

More Details

Tailgate May Open Unexpectedly
If the tailgate opens while the vehicle is being driven, cargo may fall out the vehicle and create a road hazard, increasing the risk of crash.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V347000

Manufacturer Chrysler (FCA US LLC)

Components LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES

Potential Number of Units Affected 410,351

Summary

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks equipped with an 8 foot truck bed and a power locking tailgate. Chrysler is also recalling all 2018 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks built before April 1,

2018 that are equipped with a power locking tailgate. The tailgate actuator limiter tab may fracture and cause the tailgate to unlatch and open while driving.

Remedy

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will repair the tailgate latch, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin June 28, 2019. Owners may contact FCA US customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US's number for this recall is V44. Note: 2015-2017 MY Ram 1500 pickup trucks with truck beds other than 8 foot, are currently covered under NHTSA recall 18V-486 for this issue.

I watched part of a YouTube video that went over that, how would someone go about getting that little rubber limiter piece, and how would you go about fixing it yourself and getting the reimbursement, and the acknowledgment of doing it yourself? Or is it just better to take it to them and letting them do it?

The part number is roaming around here somewhere. Its cheap but I dont know how available (since FCA seems to love "national backorder")

As far as DIY-ing it, I believe the dealer inspects the setup first....*some* trucks might need a whole new actuator based on any existing wear or damage. Most trucks will just need the rubber bumper.

Personally I would let the dealer deal with it. In the meantime keep stuff up by the cab and tied down somehow.

At least I’m kinda protected, I do have the DeeZee tailgate assist so if it does come open it’s not gonna slam, and I do have a Retrax tonneau cover kind of holding it on the top pretty well.

Guess it would be better to just let them do it.

Actually a lot of people said they are better off having it slam open, because the tailgate assist made it so they DIDNT feel it open.

I dragged the "Rear Cam" app button down to the button bar on my head unit and before the fix was done on my truck I would occasionally press it to make sure the tailgate was still up. It only stays on screen for 5-10 seconds while driving, but its better than nothing.

I ordered this for my truck even tho it's not part of the recall. Figured it wouldn't hurt. Here's the PN: 68448027AA

Well, I got an appointment tomorrow to go get it fixed.

I couldn’t find a site that would share a picture but isn’t that the piece that they stick on the actuator to keep it from damaging the tab?

Funny, the dealer I’m taking mine to tomorrow said that since it’s a recall part that they’re not even allowed to sell parts that have to do with recalls because recall repairs have to be done by the dealer.

Mine went through the phantom openings...the bad part is if you have a tonneau, you wont see it open when driving. And if you have the DeeZee assist, you wont hear or feel the tailgate thunk down. This was my experience...Id pull in somewhere, park and walk by the rear and be staring at my open tailgate....
I just let the dealer fix it. Done.

I have not had it happen to mine yet. I logged into my U-Connect and it shows a recall needs to be done. Being as my dealer that I purchased my Ram from pissed me off. I guess I will go to the dealer that told me it was against the law for them to repair my Truck because I didn't buy it from them.

Got it done yesterday. Only like a ten minute fix, and all they had to do was just insert the little rubber block.

That’s the first I’ve heard of that. The dealer I went to yesterday for mine wasn’t the one I bought the truck from.

At anytime, if you need any assistance while working with the dealer, please send us a direct message. We'd be glad to help get this campaign taken care of on your behalf.

I had mine done last Friday. It didn't take long at all.

Yep, they did mine in under 10 minutes. Just the little rubber bumper block. Said the lock and latch mechanism was fine.

Greetings all. First post. Had my recall done today. you are correct that an inspection of the latch is done first. says something about a stage 2 tech doing it? was told not every tech can do it (maybe this is the case for all chrysler recalls?) i made my appt tuesday. my little western canadian city dealership had the part readily in stock.

Mine has never fallen, but I did receive the notice. I called my dealer, and am on a waiting list. They stated Ram only ships them 10 parts/week.
