OK I am a new owner, 4000 miles on my 2012 RAM 5.7Hemi. took it in for first oil change, within minutes of driving out of dealer, engine light came on, truck buckling like a bronco. took it back, they said something about no 1 cylinger is jammed. anyone ever had that happen to them? I am a computer geek not a mechanic, my RAM was working like a charm before I took it in. they said 2 days to repair, have to take the engine apart. Am I asking for trouble if I dont ask for a new truck? suggestion???? ideas???? comments??? tks

First off welcome to RF bud. Second sounds like someone forgot to put oil back in your truck, did you inspect the dip stick before you drove or after the truck shut off?

since I am not a mechanic, or remotely close to understanding where the dip stick would be, (I opened the hood and didnt recognize anything from my younger days LoL) no I did not check it. I am waiting to see what the bill says when I pick it up, I will put all the information on here and if you could let me know what you think. All I am trying to do is figure out if they are lying to me. thanks very much for your reply.

There shouldn't be any bill on a 4000 mile truck.

Yep kinda hard for them to bill you on a truck that was in working order when dropped off then a hurt motor leaving.

Any warning lights come on that might indicate low oil pressure?

Sounds like they may have screwed the pooch and not refilled it with oil. Its either on them or the factory warranty, though, not on you to pay for.

Did the dealership do the oil change? If so any problem resulting from their crappy job is their responsibility. They will probably have to replace your block if the No.1 pistons was seizing up, I am sure it gouged the **** out of the cylinder.

They need to solve all your problems though from that perspective, and give you a loaner in the process. My dad once had an oil filter fall off his truck (got it changed at Wal-Mart... oops) while he was driving down the highway, and it seized on him, but they were great, got him a loaner, and paid for all the repairs etc. Your dealership should do the same. Just don't hit a deer with their loaner... lol

Yes, I got a loaner, and no, except for the check engine light, there was no other warning that I saw. I understand that I wont have to pay, but I should still get a bill that says 0 dollars and tell me the work they did anyway. Ill let you guys know, tks for all your input.

got my truck back

ok guys, here is the story so far. scan for codes P0301 cyl 1 missfire. recalibration cyl 1. check fuel and spark ok cylinder one - good. perform compression test cylinder one - has compression 210-215PSI. remove intake and perform pinpoint test for code P1411 - MDS solenois is faulty. remove cylinder head cover - intake rocker arm is broken/cracked. remove cyclinder head and inspect components. lifters are jammed, intake valve and pushrods are ok. the intake rocker arm is cracked on cylinder one. install new lifter, MDS solenoid and install cylinder head. fill with coolant bleed system and perform oil change after repair. start vehicle and road test - noise from the right side of engine after 10 mins of driving. isolate noise to the right side of engine cylinder #2, scan codes - no codes. remove right side cylinder head and inspect components lifters are jammed on #2 cylinder. remove all lifters, MDS solenoids and oil control vlave, clean out oil passages. Metal debris came out of the block. replace lifters and MDS solenoid. reinstall cylinder head. fill cooling system and perform oil change. Road test ok.
Now, my question is: will this cause me problems further on?????
you guys are the experts lol any input is most appreciated.
maybe I should just get a new truck?????

tks

I wouldn't keep that vehicle, maybe you could trade it. You are definitely in the hurt locker with this brand new truck.

Holy crap, yes. That really sound like it was driven with insufficient oil pressure. Who knows what else was scored or damaged.

"Metal debris came out of the block"

Means there is internal issues. Only way I would keep that motor would be to have the motor pulled, pan dropped, rotating asm dropped and inspected along with the cylinders. That being said I really doubt a dealership tec will do any of that.

^^X2 This repair if properly done will be fine. However I would be willing to bet that they didn't even remove the oil pan, let alone inspect the cam like I would want in addition to inspecting the cylinder bore, and all the rotating components. They say the pressure in the cylinder is fine... but that doesn't mean that there aren't gouges that may cause issues in the long term...

The choice is up to you, but if you can get a decent deal on a replacement, I would take it, or you will probably have to go through a lot of this again in the future.

That would scare the hell out of me right there.
I would be screaming for a new motor.

^^^This. That motor is toast. Even if it is running OK now, it will have problems at some point. You don't have metal go through the engine and not damage something. Sounds like what was said before, someone forgot to put oil in or not enough. Demand that they either replace that engine or put you in another new truck without any financial penalty to you. I wouldn't accept anything less. That truck is a ticking time bomb at this point.
